Trucks allowed in RallyX?

We took the Forester to Portsmouth Island for the last several days, and the guys in big trucks continually warned me not to take the Forester onto the beach or on the back roads because:

1. AWD won't work in sand. Only "real" 4WD like you find on Jeeps and big trucks works in sand.

2. A Forester obviously doesn't have enough clearance the back roads.

After a couple of days being ferried around, I decided to give the Forester a try, and the inland "roads" were a blast, and the beach, not a problem in the slightest. For some reason they have a bias against "little" Subarus.

So, I invited a couple of guys to participate in rallyx, only I'm pretty certain their vehicles are not allowed. It doesn't hurt to check and make sure, though. What about a Toyota Tundra or a Range Rover?

they are going to commute from Maine? :lol:

couple years back a dude showed up in a raised Toyota to the BMW Farm. he was very fast but didn't understand the need to stay on course.

i would think this would be a VP decision case by case.

and of course the destruction caused by heavier, more powerful vehicles needs to be considered also.

either this seasons first race, or last seasons last race at BMW farms, we had one of those chevy suburban thingys that turns into a truck when you remove the back. or maybe it was an escalade. I dont remember. all i remember was that he had a piece of 2X4 fly out of his bed. hah

Hey, I'm just trying to get the number of participants up so the event isn't canceled... That, and the chance to beat the pants off 'em :-)

In the past we've had a few pickups enter. I don't remember about SUVs, but I'd expect anything would be case-by-case based on how tippy they look (e.g. no Suzuki Samurais or 1st-gen Ford Broncos)...

Can we get an official ruling or case-by-case approval procedure to follow? If 4x4 trucks and SUVs are OK, I can likely get our participation up - like for the 5-Sept event where we are still lagging.

I'm secretary of a Triangle-area 4x4 club (CNC4x4.org) and when I share my RallyX pics and videos, the members are always asking me if they can race their 4x4s. I have been telling them it's not allowed.

This would be stock-height or mildly lifted vehicles like Chevy trucks, Jeep Wranglers, and Cherokees. Would have street-legal mud tires (like BFG MT), but not like huge jacked-up trucks on 40-inch tires. And these are newer rigs, like 95 and up, not rusted-out and hacked-up POSs. Most are daily drivers. Also, this is mostly 30+ year old folks with professional careers, not teenagers without a care driving something that their parents paid for.

If they're not allowed, I totally understand, but if they are, and we want the participation, then I'm happy to spread the word.

As a general rule I am hesitant to open to 4x4's with mud tires because of rollover concerns, but I am going to defer to SCCA rules in this case

A RallyCross event is open to any fixed-roof production based vehicle (including
convertibles with a factory hardtop attached, targa-types with factory panel in place,
t-tops with factory panels in place) that can pass safety inspection. If the Event
Chairman after consultation with the Event Safety Steward determines at his discretion
that a vehicle cannot safely negotiate the course, it may be excluded.

2. Tires must be DOT approved. Snow tires are allowed. No studded tires
are permitted unless ice or snow are present. Studded tires may not be
homemade using bolts or screws. Only street-legal studs are allowed.
Tires may not interfere with any parts of the car [fenders, fender liners,
suspension, etc].
“Aggressive” tires are prohibited. A tire will be considered an “aggressive
tire” if it meets any of the following criteria:
a. It does not carry a DOT approval.
b. It is marked “For competition only”, “Not for street use” or similar
verbiage.
c. It is modified or altered from its original tread pattern in any way.
d. Tires must be the original size plus/minus 20mm cross section and
5% aspect ratio.

FWIW, remember we had a S/C Toyota P/U at the BMW farm once with huge tires. All they accomplished was tearing up the course.

The guy with the Toyota Tundra I wanted to invite has "normal" tires. They're huge to me with 15" wheels of course, but normal for his vehicle. Did you mean normal full size pickup tires are huge, or those oversized wheels even for pickups?

I mean huge like 36" tires on a truck with a 10" lift.

I'm talking about inviting one guy with a clean, stock, late model 4WD Toyota Tundra and another guy with a Range Rover. Both are daily drivers, and they're unlikely to do anything stupid to damage their cars or the track.

Sweet. I will extend the invitation to stock-ish vehicles in the 4x4 club.

Chris, can they email you with a pic of their vehicle/tires before the event for pre-approval? I'd hate for folks to have to make the drive and find out they can't run, if you could have told them ahead of time that their vehicle is too tall or something.
