I was reading the different rules for RallyX from autoX, and noticed that the times on all of the runs count. But what do you do with DNFs?

dnf's are generally set to 90 seconds depending on the course. Def hard to come back from one of those.

But that would make drivers slow down and not drive fast enough to lose control :-(

In autocross, if you miss a gate, you've blown the run and there's no real point in recovering as one of your other times will almost certainly be better.

In rallycross, since all your times add together, you do not want the bogie time (90-120 seconds typically, course dependant) if you can help it, so it can make sense to stop, back up, and get through the gate. Even if this adds 15 seconds to your time, this is typically a better alternative than the bogie time - which is typically ~30 seconds slower than the slower running cars.

you dont have to be fast to be out of control!!!! but there is always reverse and turn arounds to make it right even though it is a combined time everyone is still trying to go faster and faster so, the competition makes them go faster.

a lot of these courses are to designed to go a lot slower than it looks.

there have been numerous courses where you could easily miss a gate if you're pushing it hard, or even off line.

but yes, if you're about to miss a gate, at least try to hit it, or turn around and go back through it.

you never know, you might still end up with a good overall time.

Don't confuse losing traction with losing control. With a little practice you can be fast and clean and still slide around plenty. But, just like autocross, you have to be smooth and look ahead. If you find yourself headed to the wrong side of a cone, one of 2 things has happened: 1) You went piling into a feature way too fast to have a hope of making it or 2) You misread the course. Same as in autocross.

Unlike autocross, rallycross rewards consistency and discourages banzai runs because any cones you hit will be part of your final score. Even so, it manages to be twice as fun. :woo:

Try it and report back. 8)

Just remember, if it looks like you are going to go on the wrong side of a cone and DNF, it can be better to just plow over the cone and take the cone penalty.

That "threat" is insufficient to prevent many of us from driving at (beyond) the the limits of our skills.
As Carl says, "try it and report back". This is way too much fun to miss due to worrying that you won't win.
Guilty as charged,
Charlie G

I'm not worrying I'm not going to win; that's already a given. The point is to establish an understanding of the rules and the basic strategy.

the secret to rallyx is finding the course designer that dislikes orange cones. 8) cones really only ruin the fun.

and now i will return to my state of retirement. :D
