Instead of looking for a co-drive, some of you guys convinced me at the meeting to risk my daily-driver, an automatic Subaru Forrester at the next RallyCross. I've done autocross a few times in a manual, but what the heck do you do with an automatic? Stick it in 2nd and leave it there?

This particular Forrester is a low-powered dog: step on the gas and 10 seconds later you might feel something, and the tires are just about ready to be tossed, but at least its 4-wheel drive.

I started in 1st, then short-shifted to 2nd before the first turn and left it there through the finish with the three Foresters I've rallyxed &/or played around in. This includes my mom's 2000 Forester S - which is pretty slow in a straight line, but I bet could still get FTD at one of our events.

If you want to bring it over to play around and get some advice, we're going to be grilling and playing on my rallyx course on Saturday. Feel free.

edit: one thing I would tell you that you MUST have before you rallyx a Forester (especially if you're slightly insane) is strong dampers. Either low-mile OEM or something like KYB GR2's would be fine. (that's what I installed on my mom's Forester when hers wore out)

Thanks for the advice and the invitation! (What time on Saturday?) Why are "strong dampers" considered insane? And if I were insane, where would I get them. Keep in mind, I'm a practical illiterate car-wise.

I looked on the internets, and from I could find the KYB GR2 is a "strut assembly". Is that the same as a "damper"?

the big thing with the forester is that if the suspension is wore out then it has ALOT more body roll. i am running some jdm sti forester take offs for the 1 inch lowered stance.

Dampers aren't insane. People who rallyx are sometimes insane. If you are one of those people who may go insane once the timer starts, please make sure your tall, softly-sprung vehicle has strong damping, otherwise you may get up on two wheels, or on the roof. If you can control yourself & drive within your limts and your car's limits, then it's not a problem. Good damping is a must in order to go fast consistently on a rallyx course, though.

Four Oaks rallyx site, 10AM on Saturday. We'll play around some, and grill stuff for lunch, or go to Subway or Chinese or whatever people feel like doing.

And just a reminder as before, since again this is posted in the Rallycross forum on the heels of a possible event....

whatever y'all do this weekend is in no way sponsored by or affiliated with THSCC.

Is this an open event or invite only? if so and I am free, I might consider wandering over. (how far is four oak's from Chapel Hill.)

Really? I thought something was fishy when they asked for the entry fee in beer :-)

Well we were suppose to have a RallyX this saturday, but it got cancelled. So Kevin said those who pre-registered to race can come and make the best of it and practice/play around on the course. But for those who pre-reg'd only, unless he's changed it. So double check with him, maybe some beers would change his mind

BTW you're looking at about 45mins-1 hour from chapel hill.

its off of 40, exit 319. takes right bout 30 mins from Raleigh (half of that time is getting to 40). So if you're close to 40 you can just hop on and go.

Yeah, we're just hanging out, grilling and playing around. No "event" or anything. But if you weren't pre-registered for the rallyx, there won't be any playtime for you, as that would be rewarding bad behavior. You can still come see what we're all up to, and I'll give rides to anybody who wants them.

And yes, the dampers on your car are in the form of struts. Struts are AWESOME!!!11!!

From the internets again, it looks like struts are springs and shocks combined in one unit. Does that mean if I upgrade for rallyx, so I have to change out the entire strut, or just the shocks or just the springs?
