Well, I knew I was taking a chance going over the jump because Steve did it before me an warned me. The landings sucked but the launches were pretty darn cool. Getting 3200 lbs completely airborne was a unique experience and I don't exactly have a fortune in the car. In the future given an option I might avoid it. As it sits, the car still runs fine and though the radiator is bent, it isn't leaking. It just has a new slightly re-configured fender hood bumper relationship. :D The front end wasn't exactly undamaged before, it had hit something once many years ago, I've just made it worse.

Watching the videos, I don't understand how John in the Celica goes over the jump so uneventfully, he was going just as fast or faster and it just seems like a non-event. Is that just a difference in suspension setup, he said he had a WRC engine, does he have a WRC suspension as well?

Oh, and what happened to all the people who are afraid that the jumps will break their cars?

Well, thats easy: This jump didn't hurt.
I don't know what the quirk of geometry is, but there was a landing area that worked well for our Sentra. I was a tentative on the first attempt to assess the pain-on-landing, but it came down slick as monkey-snit. I watched many of the heavier AWD cars get pummeled on landing, so I know that it was not kind to everyone.

Kevin, the jump at your house is kind of a pimple in the middle of flat ground. It kicks you up and painfully drops you (or me anyway) onto flat land. This latest jump had lead-in and lead-out geometry that worked well for me. Dunno why...

Also I believe any Subaru would be more nose heavy than a Sentra. I hit the jumps on both courses at WOT and the landings weren't too bad. With that said, I'm sure my speed was slower due to lower HP and traction issues.

Looking over Chris' pictures, I'm surprised I'm the only one with a damaged nose. There are some other cars that look like the came down pretty hard on the nose as well. Maybe Subaru's are just designed better for this?

I think a lot of cars started shedding fender liners late in the day.

A big part of the problem is that the jump wasn't actually built for that purpose, it was just a natural part of the landscape that was utilized as a jump. The front side of the jump has a pretty bad dip, which causes the rear end to rebound hard as the front end is already getting off the ground, so the car rotates in the air and noses in. And the ground drops away pretty severely there, too, which gives it more room to rotate. I knew this before I arrived there at 50mph, so I lifted and floored it just before I hit the dip to counteract the rotation. I also have rally-ready struts that don't rebound as hard as most others, which helped a little, too. The car still landed on the front tires first from what I remember, and when riding with Adam I noticed a big hole that was being dug into the ground by the front bumpers of other cars, so I decided that I'd rather drive around it than risk landing in the hole and bending my front bumper like Adam.

I built my jump to ramp up smoothly and then just drop away, so the landings are much more level. So I don't have to lift at my house - I just keep it floored.
