My sister's white coat ceremony is in Chapel Hill from 4-6pm on Sunday. She's finishing up pharmacy school and it's a big deal where they give them the big long lab coats instead of the little short ones.

Apparently (according to my family) it's cooler than rallycross, but I somehow doubt it.

Is there any way that I could run/work so that I could leave early on Sunday, around 2:30 or so? I'd be willing to work gate Sunday morning, especially since I live so close.

Thank you, Mr. McRae. Even if I say please?

Okay well how about some education on how the runs are set up and a guesstimate on when the event usually ends. Gotta remember I've never been to one of these things before.

There is an inherent problem with allowing people to set their own schedules for events. Sorry.

You might be able to work and get one of your heats done before you have to leave.

William you may want to seek a second opinion.
In this case the answer must be purposefully vague. The run groups and the run order are determined on the day of the event. On some days we run 2 wheel drive first in the morning and last in the afternoon, other days it is reversed. Competitors are subjected to changing track conditions as the day progresses, and the course in the morning is different than the afternoon course. This complicates things like running early and leaving. Also, unlike Autocross, everyone works any time that they are not driving. Because we have smaller crowds everyone gets to work morning and afternoon (but we still have more fun than Autocrossers). The general rule is pretty much that if you are not driving you are working the course.
Your results could have been different if you did not include "Duke" and "UNC" in the same post. Leaving for an NC State function could have carried a little more sympathy vote.

Methinks this type of special request would be best done privately to rally@thscc.com. Especially if you fall all over yourself in the email offering to help out in whatever other way you can.

Rallycross differs from autocross in that you are either driving or working during the entire event. If you run heat 1 and 3, you work heat 2 and 4. Run groups and order are set by the event chair.

There are no gate workers as we deal with a smaller group and need the workers on the course.

We are usually done between 3:00 and 4:00 o'clock but it varies by course and number of participants. The 4th heat normally starts before 2:30. If you drive heats 2 and 4, you may have time for a portion of your afternoon runs. If you drive heats 1 and 3, it would mean skipping out on all or part of your second work shift. That is not allowed.

As Mike stated above, maybe sending an email would be a better idea for discussing the possibilities.

Thanks,
Charlie

I'm still in mourning over our NCAA loss.

I am not surprised though; things have been falling apart with the team

Thanks for the explanation of running/working. It's looking like I might have to just do the Saturday school and miss the Sunday event. Maybe I'll just come watch on Sunday for a bit. What time do the events usually finish up?

edit: Oh nevermind, I see that was answered while I was cooking my pizza. I'll get on that email.

Well I've decided that attending the points event Sunday is going to be too much stress on myself and others, so although I'll still be having a blast on Saturday, at the most I'll just be watching on Sunday. 8)

Hope to see everyone this weekend; thanks for the advice.

IF it turns out that you would be working 4th heat (driving 3rd), and
IF you can find someone to volunteer to work your 4th heat assignment,
THEN I might think you could convince the VPs and/or event chairs to let you leave early.

Might be some small bribes required to get those IFs to line up for ya... ;-)
(no, rallycross ain't quite like autocross!)

A LOT of extra cash. Sponsor the event. Even Marcus might listen to that kind of reasoning :)

No, the moral is, ask the folks in charge IN PRIVATE, if you want a little "consideration" for something you want to do.

Cash works too
