I only knew about it because it had come up in conversation earlier in the week. So I only qualify for the beanie without the propeller.

Yea, Mike over analyzed the number a bit. Heh, bit! Geek humor! :D

Carl is correct-- it is simply 2^32 which is a fairly fundamental number in computer science for a variety of reasons.

The really scary part is when you can spout off all the powers of 2 up to 32 right off the top of your head. Good thing I don't know anybody like that!

Nah, I under-analyzed. Copy-paste into google - click wikipedia link - paste into thread. *Now* I get it! :) 2^32. Makes much more sense.

The "correct" number is actually (2^32)-2 since you can't have completely full (255.255.255.255) or completely empty (0.0.0.0) octets.

Internet genius strikes again.

What "correct" number? If you're talking about IP addresses, who cares? (2^32)-2 isn't "correct" either in that regard. But I was never talking about IP addresses.

Like Carl said, back to discussing cars...

With the weather this weekend looking worse and worse, I can't imagine making much progress on the car. That probably drives a nail in the coffin as far as getting it running before Feb. 2nd. Oh well...

Rake up some of the leaves, put them under the fallen pine trees next to the car and start a nice bonfire. That will keep you nice an warm as you work on the car and won't be any more dangerous than your method of engine extraction!

Those aren't fallen pine trees. They are my emergency makeshift backup jackstands! You clearly know nothing about tools... :)

That's what the pile of cinder blocks and bricks is for! :)

The lawn mower under the tarp? Well, that's for mowing the lawn! :D

I still haven't figured out a good use for the old skylights piled up next to the shed. I'm thinking sunroof on my new Camaro but I haven't fully decided yet...

Sort of scary that I read the title and thought 4G... The really scary thing is folks who can do math in binary and convert to the base system of your choice in their head. A co-worker in the startup I was in a long time ago could do that, but then he spent most of his time coding raw in machine language for embedded processors. Yikes.

Back to rally beaters, Jim - if you want to see something to compare between your car and a running STD hatch ping me - my Civic is a 90 but I don't think anything is really different between the two.

You have probably already mounted that engine in a stand by now, but just in case, I have to ask...the phone cord is not still holding it 4 feet off the ground, is it?

Yikes indeed. I used to be a lot better at that (not quite to your co-worker's level, though) when I was writing a ton of assembly code but my mind has dulled a bit now that I've been doing mostly higher-level language stuff in the last few years.

As they say, there are only 10 kinds of people in this world-- those that understand binary and those that don't. :)

Thanks. I might do that if I get stuck on something. I still have the red CRX for reference but I haven't looked closely enough yet to see if there are any differences (besides the fuel injection setup).

Naw, it is safely back on mother earth. I have no doubt that it would still be hanging there if I had left it though. That cabling was actually pretty strong and I was fairly careful to make sure I didn't wrap it around a sharp edge.

Those little D15/D16 Honda motors really aren't that heavy. I managed to do the red CRX motor swap *without* using an engine lift. I didn't have the transmission attached but I removed the busted motor and placed the new motor in the engine bay by hand. I did drop the nose of the car onto the ground (no front suspension) so I didn't have to lift them so high but it still wasn't that bad.

And before anybody asks, my back issues were present long before I ever lifted the motors.
