Geez, it's 10:30 and no one has any comments about the event? Well I've got one- GREAT EVENT! The morning course I'd say was one of the most technical we've had- well, maybe not that technical, but you really had to look ahead or you were basically doomed. Unfortunately there were not a lot of visual references (though I really thought it was obvious enough) which led to a lot of DNFs. Also a tight and tricky finish which was more or less necessitated by the use of the "whammy tube" finish. Which, BTW, worked great all day- I can only guess how many false finish trips (due to dust) we avoided by having that in place.
For the afternoon the course was a lot more open, and I'd stop just a bit short of calling it more fun because of those deep sandy places, particularly the first turn which I never found a good way around. But the last right-left before the finish, over the crest and through the dip, was pretty fun. I saw a lot of folks lifting a right front wheel over that crest- very cool! Maybe I got some of them on video, but I don't know right now. At 1 point the wind was blowing such that the dust cloud from crossing the ditch the first time drifted into my path right as I was crossing back over the ditch, completely obcsuring the finish! But I didn't lift, took a guess, and fortunately it worked out OK...
Thanks to Mike and Jim for coming up with the good course ideas. For those of you who weren't at setup, we really struggled over how to get turned around and across those swales near the corner, and finally Mike realized that we should just have the start and finish there to avoid the problem completely. A stroke of genius that really made the whole thing possible.
And thanks to all the folks who came on out to play- we had 38 drivers, which I thought was pretty darn good considering the forecast and that it was Mother's Day weekend.
Thanks again y'all! I hope to have results up tomorrow morning- we went out with friends tonight instead of sitting here, I hope you'll forgive me...
