are collectively paying $1,350, $850, and $450 for first, second and third place finishes at NASA rally events in the Rally Spec Focus series. We're required to carry their decals. It also means that we must use specific parts from those vendors.

The Conover Transaxles decals came from Cameron Conover who did the work on my transmission (adding Quaif LSD and changing final drive ratio).

Not too shabby. I figured they did since you put their decals on.

Now you just have to drive real fast.

Is there a reason why you went with a Quaife instead of a Torsen? From what I've read about the MTX-75 transmission, the Quaife needs a lot of work with shims to fit properly, and the Torsen fits right up.

I got a really good deal on the Quaife. Since I hired a professional to do the install the dificulty of the task was not a factor to me.

Simon, I have a spare MTX-75 sitting around collecting dust should you ever need one in an pinch.

Is the helical diff a series requirement or something? Wouldn't a clutch-based diff work better in most cases? Or is something like that not available for your tranny? Just curious...

I'm tempted to get one of those cheap OBX helical diffs to put in the rally-x CRX but I'm wondering if it would even be worth it given that it goes open when one wheel is in the air.

Any thoughts on the effectiveness of a helical diff in the dirt?

Jim

Put my name on it - you never know.

I have heard that the MTX-75 is quite robust and in my 35 years of driving I haven't destroyed a transmission - yet.

We're only allowed to run stock or the Torsen or Quafe diff.

I don't have any thoughts on the effectiveness of any type of diff in the dirt. Ask me again in a year. :-)

From what I've heard, it's very robust. In the Contour (before the design was changed for the Focus), the shift tower has a 7mm bolt in it that likes to shear the head off of and it falls to the bottom. I can't describe to you how much fun I had getting it out of there (on the one that's still in my car).

There's a guy in Michigan (Terry Haines) that worked at Ford in England when the transmission was designed. He has various services that can make the tranny even more bulletproof; he can be found at http://www.fordcontour.org .

There's one major problem with the torsen/quaife over a clutch type diff in rally: If you break an axle you can't limp out on the other one and maybe finish if there is a service close enough.

That said, the stock open diff (it is open, right?) has the same problem so you're still at a competitive advantage with the quaife.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that the second reading of your race team (u suk = you suck racing) wasn't a mistake.
