Executive Summary:
We done good. Timing & Scoring went very smoothly, reports were generated frequently and quickly, and Emmie's new 2-day scoring system worked great. Some of us drove very well.

Tired now, going to bed. More later.

Congratulations to Brian Herring and Keith Vail for taking 1st and 2nd in Prepared AWD and 4th/5th overall! Brian was on track for a 2nd overall, but had a disagreement with a few small trees on the side of the course, which cost him about 16 seconds.

Congratulations to Chris Suich for beating his co-driver Keith Strassel to win Prepared FWD!

Carl Fisher, better luck next time! (SRT4 is the fastAR! )

And guess who took FTC1, FTC2, FTC3, FTC4 and the overall victory by ~ 27 seconds... My car is AWESOME.

The bus AC worked great - thanks, Mitch. Transmission worked fine all the way there & back, but it did have some starting issues. Just had to keep cranking it until it started - which was about 10 seconds at one stop. There's a lot of cleaning to do, which I'll be working on tomorrow. If anybody wants to come help, feel free.

We heard lots of compliments on our equipment, our timing staff, and our driving. I think we all represented the club very well, and we got a lot of people interested in coming down to play with us at rallyxes, autoxes, and track events. Yeehaw.

This was a great event, and everyone who loves to rallyx but didn't make it really missed out. Think of this site as the VIR of rallyx courses. :D

Oh, yeah - and on Saturday, ALL of the women present at the drivers' meeting (not counting Pego Mack, an SCCA official from Kansas) were from NC. (unfortunately none of them were drivers, but they all worked hard contibuting something to the event this weekend)

The Event:
The entry field was disappointingly small, only 24 drivers, and 23 with times (a 2-driver Audi broke a halfshaft on their very first run and were done for the weekend). That made it tough to fill all the worker positions, and Rob came to me several times to take (or try to take) T&S people from our team and put them on course. We barely had enough people, and by Sunday afternoon, with some competitors leaving early (long tows, etc) Rob actually had to con some spectators into working!

Rob seemed to be running the whole show mostly by himself, with only a little help from some of the other regulars. Again it made me thankful that we have such a volunteering sprit in our club.

It seemed like DC Region SCCA, THSCC, and New England Region SCCA had the largest groups of drivers represented there, judging from the entry list and folks I recognized.

They ran their event basically the same as ours (no surprise, as we originally modeled after them), with 3 runs in the morning in 1 direction, then 3 runs in the afternoon in the other. Unlike us, though, their course doesn't rut up, so they didn't have to change it. Sunday was a repeat of Saturday as far as format and course direction went, and the final score was the sum of all 12 runs over the 2 days.

There had been heavy rain at the site on Wednesday, and even by Saturday morning there were a few significant puddles on course. The clay base didn't drain water at all basically, and was really slick when wet! Most notable was 1 corner near the end of the morning course that, even trying to take it at 5mph, sent cars sliding off course and nearly into the woods. It was nearly frictionless!

Other parts of the course were hard-packed and fast. Dust and loose grit sometimes made them slick as well, but where the line was clean it was almost like driving on tarmac. People were squealing tires and leaving rubber on course it was so grippy!

By Sunday the passage of cars, plus some tractor work by site host Dave Pomfret and dried up any remaining moisture on course, but now the problem was dust! Thick dust, worse than I think we've had at any of our events, made course workers lives miserable and made things very busy in the bus, keeping track of the false trips on the timer. Emmie, who didn't compete but wanted to make sure the results worked right, basically babysat the timer all day, hitting Reset Finish or Reset Start as needed to keep things on track. That, plus great work by fellow timing workers Chris Suich, Keith Vail, and Brian Herring, with an assist from Laura Suich, allowed us to avoid needing very many timing-related reruns (less than 5 all weekend).

I'm see I'm starting to segue into Timing & Scoring issues now, so I'll pick this commentary up later. Others feel free to chime in about anything!

Yes, the water splash Carl mentioned was fun. :D

Oh, and the exhaust pipe tried to fall off the bus again, but we rigged it up with exhaust clamps and wire. I think it needs to be welded - and I'm pretty sure it needs to happen before taking it to be inspected.

If we can get the bus close enough to my welder (shouldn't be a problem), I'll be glad to weld it up- or at least give it a shot.

Also, let me know if you still need a place to get it inspected- I'll reveal my "secret" source (a couple of miles from here)- they'll do it if it's registered outside Wake Co....

Timing & Scoring:
As I mentioned, by Sunday the conditions had gotten quite dusty, making conditions challenging for everyone, but the T&S team (led by Emmie) really shone and stayed right on top of it.

Kevin parked the bus right by their fire tower, a perfect location at the high point of the course, and also the central spectator/gathering area. It also turns out that it was within easy reach of both the start and finish locations, so we didn't need to use the wireless timer. With the display set up nearby and the trailer proudly displaying the club graphics, we had the crowd impressed before the first car turned a wheel.

When we first got set up, an initial test of the PA showed it not to be working, but quick work by audioman Keith Strassel and Chris Suich got it going again. It was loud and clear, and the sound carried well to just about everywhere that people were. The computer operators (Brian and me) were doubling as announcers, which worked out pretty well and I think was greatly appreciated by specators and competitors alike.

Rob had asked us to print results after every heat, and frankly I think people were a bit blown away when we posted the first set before Heat 1 workers had even gotten back from their stations! The DC region guys use stopwatches (I believe) for timing and have results compiled generally within a week of the event. The New England guys have a JAC timer, but no software so they also convert their raw logs to results by hand after the event is over. So it was a new experience for most of the folks to have nice-looking results available so quickly.

The software that we use for our rallycrosses doesn't support a 2-day, 12-run event, so Emmie spent many hours before the event cooking up a slick system whereby each day is run as a separate event, then she imports the all the data and produces comprehensive reports from there. Without that, we could only have produced single-day results, then had to make a spreadsheet or something to generate the combined results. That would not have been so slick, and we couldn't have that! ;-) Emmie or I will try to post a link to a PDF copy sometime tonight or tomorrow probably.

Next up: How we did!

Brian was calling it a hair chop. We all stuck with rally tires all day both days. Kevin and Brian didn't want to risk damaging their street tires that they needed to drive home on and I only brought 2 street tires and figured 2 streets on the front with 2 rally tires on the rear wouldn't work out too well. I will post a couple pictures of my chunking outer edge from my rally tires to show you the carnage that all our tires took.

Nice pic's!!! Thanks for posting.

I enjoyed the weekend as well. Lots of good driving and socializing were had by all. We were very fortunate that the weather was not blazingly hot nor too wet.

Being my first national event, it was rewarding to see that I belong to a club that really has their act together and that I am associated with very talented drivers. Thanks to Kevin, Carl and others for sharing their advise to impove my driving skills during the event. OK... OK... enough BS shovelling.

I think I'll leave the mud on the side of the Bovine Beater as a momento of the week-end. :D

From what various folks at the event said to us, it would seem that THSCC, as a club, came off looking like rock stars this past weekend! Of course, Kevin put on a show with his stack of FTs and some very good driving was done by other THSCCers as well, so our driving reputation held up pretty well. But, they were also very impressed with the "professionalism" of THSCC's operation -- go figure! From our equipment to our small but very effective work-force at the event, we got more than a few compliments and comments of surprise about our bus/trailer rig, PA and display, organization of our equipment, timing (with other than a stopwatch :) ) and scoring operation, and real-time results (which I was still working on in the bus  ). Those of you who weren’t there, rest assured that, when I talked with folks about these things, I made sure to explain that the few of us they saw there were only a small contingent of the large number of hard-working volunteers THSCC has who make all this stuff happen – and again they were impressed! So, I’d like to thank the THSCC folks who went along for their great help at the event! And, I’d like to thank all the THSCC volunteers, past and present, who’ve put their time and efforts into making THSCC the club it is today! We really got to see some recognition of the fruits of those labors this past weekend and I wanted to be sure to pass that recognition along. :)

--------------------------------------

Here’s a bit of the weekend’s recap from my perspective inside the bus :) :

I’ve always loved this particular course, but I went this time for the sole purpose of working T&S and dealing with the new results stuff, since (1) I expected there could possibly be major dust troubles and (2) these new 2-day rallyX results were pretty much untested. Boy, was I right about the dust! If you think you’ve seen dust at an event, think again! On Sat, the wind came out of the north and blew the dust away from the bus. The course was still really dusty as it dried out, but we (in the bus) could see it a little better with the wind blowing away from us. But, the wind changed to come from a more southerly direction on Sun, often pretty much obscuring our vision of the course completely! The wind change required us to close the bus up, so a huge thanks to whoever made sure the AC was working for us! There were times we couldn’t really even tell if a car had started and could barely tell if one finished! Laura Suich was invaluable helping all weekend with those start/finish confirmations and car numbers. There were often 3 cars on course and, at the worst of the dusty periods, the Start and Finish trips were both blinking together for seconds at a time!

I pretty much spent both days just staring at the JAC box. But with some great help from Chris Suich and Keith Vail, I think we did a pretty dang good job of keeping the correct starts and stops on track; I only remember 1 or 2 reruns caused by timer miscues. The only real unfortunate result of the false finishes was that resetting the finish time also resets the display, so probably at least half of the times were immediately wiped from the display. However, Carl and Brian Herring did a really nice job on the PA calling times and cones (at least the cones that got reported before the car was long gone—the course workers couldn’t see either) and providing a little extra commentary, as well. :) WDCR provided someone to write times and cones on a white board, so he did that via our PA announcements. Upon our arrival on Fri afternoon, Kevin had reported that the PA wasn’t working. But, Audioman, Keith Strassel, and Chris Suich (co-drivers of the Bovine Beater, complete with mooing sounds) sprang right into action and got that going again; so the PA and radio broadcasts worked flawlessly for the entire event and nobody but the THSCC folks were ever the wiser.

Even with all the false trips for the bus folks to handle, the nastiest worker jobs of the weekend for the THSCC crowd went to Kevin and Keith Strassel as their Starter jobs got taken over by a non-competitor who volunteered to do that all weekend (though he was late arriving on Sun and Christine got recruited to fill in for him for a while). I think Kevin and the Starter probably faired pretty well with the dust for their positions on Sat, but Sun the dust was coming their way the majority of the time. But there was no escape for Keith on either day at his worker position somewhere “out there” in the middle of the course (there was no way we could actually see him to tell where he was standing!).

I did get asked, by a lady who stopped by the bus, exactly who we were and if we were going to be at some event in a couple of weeks doing their T&S. I politely said “no” instead of the “HELL NO” I was thinking. :D I’m beginning to think we should broaden the scope of our slogan to at least “The Mid-Atlantic’s Premier Amateur Motorsports Organization”. 8)

--------------------------------------

If you like rallyXing, you really need to try this Oakland Acres site at least once. And, if you want to do that, you’d better pick an event this year as owner Dave Pomfret has the place up for sale. Unknown if the eventual new owners will even allow WDCR to hold events there. But, even if they do, it’s quite unlikely any other owner will take as much pride and interest in prepping the site as Dave does.

Here are the class and overall results from the event. I think I’ve tweaked everything about the results that anybody has mentioned, but if you (especially you drivers from the event) spot anything questionable, please PM me as 1) I want to make sure they are right for the SCCA posting and 2) they need to be fully ready for the next 2-day rallyX! :)

Wow. Lots of words and stuff. :D

I wanted to add that we were talking to Pego Mack, the SCCA official overseeing the event, and she said she'd like to run, but the rules say that she can't. We looked at her like she was crazy, then pointed out how stupid that rule appeared to us, being THSCC members. I told her not to be mad at us for making fun of SCCA, that being an independent club we were supposed to do that. Her response... "Yeah, I've heard stories about Tarheel." :D

Note in the action photos that you can see some of the rubber laid down on the dirt- it was certainly a lot thicker in other places, but in http://home.att.net/~kevinmallen/OA_RXchlng_2006_07.jpg you can see a bit of it, just to the outside of Keith's wheels.

You can also get a glimpse of other parts of the course- it's a very cool site, with interesting curves, elevation and camber changes.
