Hey Kevin,

Just curious, how much gas was in your gas tank today?

which car? :D

The WRX had around a half tank, but the Forester had a little less than that. The Forester also had 2 passengers on the 51.5 sec afternoon run, and I was driving at about 8/10ths. (I wasn't driving at 8/10ths EVER in the WRX)

When I get that beawtch broken in (has 500 miles on it now  ), drop 300 lbs worth of passenger & get the WRX sedan takeoff suspension on it...

The courses yesterday were really all about knowing where to go fast & where to take it easy so you could hold the fast line & not get bogged down in the loose dirt on the outside of the turn. Car prep/weight had very little to do with the times people were running.

For any of the 2WDers who are reading this & wondering what went wrong, next time you should watch Rob Bergstrom & do EXACTLY what he does. It was interesting seeing all the 2WD guys go flying through those turns at the back of the field & bog, and then seeing the difference in line & technique as Rob (& Carl Fisher  ) ran, and flew out of the turns. Didn't see Feinberg back there, but I'm sure he was doing it right, too. Once everybody starts learning the nuances of what is the proper line & how to stay there, that's when the car differences are going to influence the times. And then the competition will really start heating up. :D

But back to the handling of the WRX wagon, I did remove the spare tire this time & I did that turn-down pipe that took 20 lbs of muffler off. I could definitely feel a difference when braking from high speeds. Last rallyx it got really loose every time I had to do that, and I ended up wasting time trying to return from being sideways. So if you were having any problems with that, dropping some weight from the rear should help.

So we need to get a SE-R with a 140HP and a LSD before we start right?

Nah, just considering replacing my "beater" with a slightly faster, nicer "beater". Current candidates: some early 90's AWD Subaru Wagon (recommendations?), 325ix, SE-R.

Sound better? If Rob had been co-driving the General Lei, I'm betting he still would've won SU2. I'm sure more of the SO4 guys would've beat him, but a lot of them still would've been embarrassed. :P

(I'm just glad he didn't bring the 323 GTX!!!!! )

Probably so, but he wouldn't have beaten Jim F. by 14 seconds.

Rob can drive no doubt, but having 70 more HP and an LSD has it's advantages.

I did some testing a while back, after one of last year's rallycrosses. Compared the blue 2.5RS (with Tein rally suspension) to Christine's stock Civic (actually it had a big front swaybar - which probably hurt front grip a little). Running about 50 seconds worth of course, there was an avg of ~ 3 seconds difference per run (the 2.5RS was faster, of course! ).

So from my experience,

Suspension + 60 more hp + AWD + manual transmission = 3 seconds.

So over the course of 6 runs, there would be an 18-second difference. Add Rob to the Civic & drop at least another 6 seconds. So now there's 12 seconds difference. But put Rob in the 2.5RS & the gap opens again.

Just sharing my own personal experience & opinions... didn't mean to offend anybody, but if I did, get over it. :P :D

All I was saying was that the fastest cars weren't necessarily setting the fastest times, and that careful driving was worth more than car prep. When there's a 30-second difference in times between 2 cars, unless the slow car is almost dying on course, it probably ain't the car.

If you want an example at my expense, look at the Rockingham results. Anders used his brain, and I didn't. Anders = 1st overall, I was close to last overall. Same car, 2 totally different results

Like I said...Rob can drive. However to satisfy my curiosity and yours, next event we'll give him three runs in the General and see how close he comes to his times in the SE-R.

Christine says she's up for the challenge! :D

"I might not beat all of them, but I bet I'll beat most of them."

(she's going to kick my ass when she reads this... )

I was asking because in the December rallycross I had removed my spare tire but was running with a little over half a tank of gas. This time I was down to about a quarter of a tank and decided to leave the spare tire in, I figured the low flat weight couldn't hurt.

It seemed (I'm taking into account the wetter conditions now) that I had a little more grip with the extra gas in the tank. I guess next time I'll have to try a little more gas and then make a decision on the spare tire later.

I had a great time Saturday and enjoyed trying to run you down. Your one hell of a competitor. :moon:

And Wagons DO rule. Maybe someone should build a wagon to run in the club rallys......hmmmmm. :hyper2:
