Although I don't believe adding to the weight of a car in any way can help on dry pavement I'm not so sure about dirt as I have no experience competing on it. Could it be that actually adding some well tied down ballast over the drive wheels on my RWD RX7 would be beneficial? And if so is it allowed?

I don't know if it'd help you or not- maybe? Anyway, you're welcome to, as long as the ballast is secure...
