Yeah, I sent this to the NC-Rally list back in March. At that time, the original was posted on
http://www.duen.hu/ . It's from Hungary. It's no longer hosted there in it's original location.
Some exploration of their site will show you the cars that they use there are really dicey. Some are proper rally cars, but they also rally Trabants (those plastic/fiberglass Eastern block cars) that don't seem to have any cages.
I would imagine that this guy in the video was competing on some kind of "underground rally" where they don't bother to close the roads. All that stuff takes money, time, and fear of litigation. Same with building safe cars.
Take home lesson: The "rally in Europe is way ahead of America" idea is very much an oversimplification. We are fortunate here to have the economy for the competitors to afford to build good safe cars.
Sad about the folks on the video, they look pretty messed up. I suppose it emphasizes that rally
is pretty serious, like any other high speed driving.
