So "officially" what are our rules for it? Scca says either a hard top OR a roll bar. What say the powers to be so I know what I need to do for prep this winter.

Safety wise, I think a roll bar is your best bet. A hardtop on a Miata won't do a thing to protect you in a roll over.

Either will a roll bar, there are plenty of pictures that prove that.

I am working on finding a roll bar but getting one used is hard to find.

I went and found a bunch of pics of Miatas with bars that rolled over and don't see any decently built bars that failed. I saw plenty of questionable roll bars that I wouldn't trust.

I have a Hard dog hard top in mine and it looks plenty strong. Of course the other major thing is making sure you're far enough below the bar as well. I did see some pics of collapsed windshields but the roll bar was still in the same place even though the shield frame collapsed. I think the better way to make sure you're under it enough would be to make a straight line from the bar to like the point of the hood where the shock/spring towers are and make sure you can fit under that line.

I think some of the concern about the bar is if you roll in soft dirt and the bar sinks in. I know a little about staying under the Line if the windshield frame collapses.

There's a big difference between "none" and "very little". Without a bar, the car has a near 100% likelihood of crushing you. A proper rollbar will prevent that. (and might actually stop a complete roll-over -- I've seen a few of those.) Yes, it can dig in an slowly bury you, but that's survivable. (and our insurance likely says you have to have one.)

Your best bet is to check with Bowie from an insurance perspective. Email treasurer@thscc.com

Indeed, though some clubs actually take the summer off. :D

I found something else you need for this Rallycross Miata.

Suspension is already complete in my head. Right now just looking for a deal on a roll bar or a new one before the season starts.

Okay, this thread brings up a great point, because one without a rollbar was allowed to compete at our event yesterday. Not to mention, some SCCA members were present and took note, although no one spoke up to raise concern. (I didn't realize it until after the event, or I would have spoken up. I like RallyX and want to keep our program alive.)

They've had a bar on it at previous events. It was an oversight, probably because no one was doing tech.
