I am afraid that the big hole in the top of the Bug's motor has not healed. It is going to take an engine case-adectomy. It used to be that there was an old bug engine block behind every gas station. No more. Now if you want a rebuilt motor you have to supply a useable engine case or pay several hundred core fee. I am tearing down an old motor from a burned bug (interior fire) to get the engine case. The valve train is crusty, and the pistons stuck (water in the intake), but the internals in the block are not too bad. Hopefully the engine case will be okay.

I had the first engine built according to 'conventional wisdom'. I am going more robust this time: balanced crank, balanced lightened flywheel, high rev valve springs, heavy duty rocker arm shaft, rotating valve adjusters, expanded oil sump, remote oil filter, remote oil cooler, and electronic rev limiter. 'Conventional wisdom' said I did not need any of that, but a big hole says otherwise.

'Roary' the Super Beetle will return, but not this weekend.

Have fun everyone! Kick some dust!!!

You should put a 2.2L Subaru engine in it, Pitch. I have one in my back yard, if it will work and you want to try it. For your rally bug, free/come pick it up.

Oh, and what time is setup? I want to go help, if things go according to plan here tomorrow.

Setup is usually 2pm on. As I don't want to leave until afternoon, there wont be anything to setup if I'm driving the bus.

Just got back from Orlando, and tired from spending 14 hour days at amusement parks, but what's one more day standing around in the hot sun? See y'all tomorrow!

Kevin, I have done some research on the Subie swaps into old VWs. On a scale from 1-5 (1= bolt in easy), a Subie swap into a Vanagon is a 1. Into a bus, KG, or square back is 2-3. But into a Type 1 (a Bug or Super Beetle) it is 4-5. Welding, cutting, fabricating, etc. Plus a stock VW transaxle will not hold up to Subie power.

Thanks for the offer! The 2.2 would be great if there were a reasonable way to put it in!

How did the rally cross go???

Fun, but really loose/slippery. Easy to get too sideways, and lose time. My recce WRX was fastest overall, Ray Metts was second. Sebastian K was extremely slow. Some dipshit in an Outback "off road edition" tried to do all his afternoon runs at once - just kept turning right when he was supposed to turn left to finish. A lot of people got out of control and spun off the course. Maybe Jeff Eng would like to share his in-car video?

I liked it. The little golf was lovin being super sideways.Scandinavian flick almost every hard turn, slidin all over ! so much fun.Yes it was sideways, yes it was slick, but hey its rally cross.Any easier they would call it autocross!Just kidding, but really it was fun.Dad took first again, I took second, and the car although not perfect ran great.I got great bbq for lunch, and sheetz for dinner, the truck ran fine. The little guy ran fine, hot but fine.We have a fan that keeps dying.
It needs both fans running, not just one.Why it does this is a mystery, but I thought wilson was so much fun.Real good time,If we can fix all the quirks the car has, it will be alot of fun to run in the future.
