Talking to the guy now about price, but there's a lot of dirt there to put together a nice-sized course.

The actual track is out of our price range, $2,000, but Charlie and I will be checking out the surrounding field and parking lot, much like we do at the Wilson County Fairgrounds.

They never have events on Sunday, so I'm pushing this as some extra easy money, with no needed personnel or work on their part for a day they never use anyway.

With it being easy to get to off hwy 95 is nice also. I think we could possibly pull some new guys from the F-ville and South Carolina area to this venue.

OK, so now we are really excited about this venue. Michael and I just returned from a site visit. The site is 1-1/2 times the size of Wilson Fairgrounds with virtually no restrictions on course design (i.e.: staying on the gravel roads). The terrain is pretty much a nice flat grassy area where they host an annual fair and Indian Convention. They have grading equipment that they are accustomed to using around the site after events.

The soil is sandy but well compacted in the area we would plan to use, but would likely rut if the course is too "aggressive" in terms of hard braking and sharp turns. One could easily anticipate open, flowing courses that would be fun to drive. The greatest challenge may be to keep speeds at a reasonable level without resorting to "too many cones".

The cost for this venue is similar to that for Wilson, so we will need to make sure that we have enough entrants to cover expenses. We anticipate some interest from the nearby Ft. Bragg and Pope AFB....young men and women with sporty cars. We have little experience in contacting military participants, so if you know any communication secrets, please share them. If we can get 5-10 local participants in addition to our "regulars" we can make this a wonderful site and operate with a positive cash flow.

This is an easy drive or tow down I95 with an exit onto NC87 towards Elizabethtown then turn onto Doc Bennett Rd on the left in about 1-1/2 miles. Distance is about 84 miles from RDU and is a comfortable 1 hr 20 min drive at the posted limit.

The owner is open to the idea of participants camping on the site overnight (locked in) in case a few folks want to combine a Saturday evening watching dirt track racing with a Sunday Rally-X. If you have any interest in doing this please email the Rally-X VPs (or post a reply) so we can gage interest and formulate a plan. The dirt track is 0.4 mile banked dirt track with speeds in excess of 120 MPH for some classes. There is also a neighboring campground just up the road that has more civilized camping facilities for those who crave a shower in the morning.

Help us build excitement and participation for this site!!!

The address is 3704 Doc Bennett Rd. Fayetteville, N.C. 28304, but Google maps shows this address on the opposite side of I95. The track is adjacent to this Google address: https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&tab=wl

Thinking about bringing out the WRX...how risky do you think it will be for a daily driver? Rocks, potholes, suspension damage etc....

Its flatter than Wilson. The land is pool table flat sand, but mostly hard packed. The grass is tough; I have no dought that it'll be down to sand in 30 runs, but there's plenty of space to adjust for soft spots in the afternoon.

The hard packed sand was really fast and fun, and the soft parts were fun too. The course we have in mind will be longer than anything we've had, and probably require 3rd gear.

Please ignore the lunatic ramblings of the VP who said, "and probably require 3rd gear." One of us will be trying to keep top speeds lower than adjacent I95 posted limits. By the way you can see I95 from the track, so wave at your friends as they pass by.

We've had a course that required 3rd gear at Wilson.

I'm excited about the new course. I am hoping that this year has more participation; I am wondering if I can get a few friends of mine involved if I share the car with them.

Your greatest risk at Wilson would possibly be a stone chip in the paint if you don't have mudflaps and like to spin the tires (who doesn't).
If we run at Fayetteville the sand is soft and unlikely to damage anything.

When we held the rally-x at the Rockingham raceway the sand was really, really deep, we had 36 participants, and the club was still new at designing courses. The courses had too many tight turns and hard braking zones that tended to rut up and got a little bouncy. Also that site was on a rolling sand hill with lots of uneven ground. The Fayetteville site alternates as a fairground ride site and is pancake griddle flat. There are a few shallow depressions that we will design the course to avoid.

Short answer is you should be fine. Most of the scary stories came from Orange County and the BMW Farm where there were some large stones and undulations in the topography that (taken improperly at speed) could damage a low Subaru rental car (don't ask).

P.S.: In Rally-X you may run with the windows up (even have the A/C on if you like). This can keep the dust out of the car.

sounds like fun, looking forward to trying this venue out!

even in my RS i was topping 2nd and getting well into 3rd at the November Wilson event. didn't really bother me as the course design accommodated the speeds just fine.
