I need to clarify the comments about the tire mounting machine.

Yes, I do have one, and yes I am willing and able to help re-seat debeaded tires at the RallyX.

But, this weekend I will not be at home on Saturday until around 12 noon, then Sunday I'll probably not be home until after 1pm or so.

Just FYI if anyone needs me during this time frame, better practice your field tire mounting methods.......

I've had good luck with this device:

http://www.harborfreightusa.com/usa/ite ... it=find+it

It won't completely put a tire on the rim, but it is useful for breaking a bead and cleaning it out in the field. I've also got a large air tank that has enough volume to re-bead the tire, or at least my 15" tires.

thanks for the comment bret.

we usually have 2-3 people who bring a tire mounting machine. we try not to bug you while you're relaxing. lol

so yes, our members have the capability to rebead and clean your tires.

thanks again.

see you guys this weekend.

I put tubes in my tires and forget about de-beading. I seem to get better traction with lower tires pressures too.

Now all I need to do is learn how to drive a fast car!

When I ran street tires on the CRX, this was key. I debeaded a couple before I finally had tubes done. I think I eventually packed enough dirt in the bead to get one out of balance, but never lost any air with the tubes.

Changing over to Rally tires works too - super-duper ultra-stiff sidewalls accomplish the same thing, and makes you faster to boot

+1 Seems the answer to mechanical and tire maladies is to get a Subaru and run NO4. I have had zero issues.

Fixed it for you. :D

(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subaru_GL-10) The Flying Coffin was a lot of fun... when it was running. :? I don't know if we'll ever get the motivation to break open that 2nd engine and try to fix it, or if the car will sit at my place until I get the time to part it out. Too bad, since we had the suspension and wheel-lug pattern conversion parts to fix the rest of the car... :boohoo:

I find the conversation about debeading to always be interesting. :)

While I am not the best driver, I have been doing events since 2006, and I don't recall having ever debeaded. I HAVE gotten dirt in the bead (which started a slow leak), and I have ran SO4 and NO4. Maybe it has to do with the bravado and steering angle people use on the course? Maybe it has to do with cheaping out and getting the least expensive equipment/tires you can.

Regardless, getting rally tires REALLY helps the issue, but does not make you invincible. I just bring 2 sets of tires to each race, and make a value call whether it is worth it or not to change out tires.

What is nice is that we have VERY proactive and intelligent members who are very resourceful who have brought mobile tire machines. That, and everyone is ridiculously friendly on rallyX weekend (and times when an event is not on as well!). I am glad brent was there when we started, but I am also glad that we can "take care of ourselves" now as well!

De-beading tires is a problem for street tire class far more than rally tires, but as we learned, the biggest factor in de-beading tires is the driver's steering input. When the car starts pushing there is a natural (but incorrect) instinct to keep turning the steering wheel in hope of a miracle. At some point the tire just becomes a dozer blade and pushes dirt (about half of which enters the tire bead).
We did find that running tubes does mitigate the problem and we ran tubes until the dirt inside the tires finally wore a hole in the tubes. As the tubes failed, we went back to tubeless and discovered that we had learned (mostly) not to keep pushing. Now we mostly use the tire machine on the trailer for other people's tires.

Course is setup!

Remember: BRING WATER! BRING SUNTAN LOTION!

There will be two courses in the morning that will be combined in the afternoon for "putting lessons together". There will be designated teachers, but drivers in each of the two groups are two ask for help and instruction, if needed.

Starting at 8am:
Morning Course A: 40 seconds
Morning Course B: 45 seconds

Lunch: 12:01pm

Starting at 1pm:
Afternoon Combined course: ~70 seconds

Course Shutdown: 3pm
Will be setting up the Sunday Special Stage Morning and Afternoon.

Summary:
I think everyone will enjoy it who comes out, and is in store for a real treat!

Sunday:

Morning and Afternoon Special Stage: ~80 seconds

Come and enjoy!

Great day, guys thanks so much for setting this up, it was just what I needed, and Maria had a great time. My only tiny complaint is you forgot to mention bringing goggles and a breathing mask :-)

Driving home I went through the McDonalds to pick up a little snack for the long drive home, and the guy taking my money wanted to know what type of engine my car had. I replied with one word: "stock". He pressed on, saying, "you know, how much horsepower does it have". Ever the model of efficiency I replied with "130". He got a puzzled look on his face and said "why bother?". Luckily it was time to move to the next window.

The McDonalds did redeem itself as the girl handing me the goodies said "isn't that a rally car?".

All:

I hope those at the school and rallyX had a good time! I enjoyed setting up the course, and I apologize it took me a while to get the afternoon course right. With the help of David Edwards, Mike Whitney, Michael Jackson (!), the VPs and a few key others; we got the course lined up, and relatively safe. I would like to state that is was GREAT seeing everyone nearby just pulling in to help wherever they could. It was awesome to see that level of group participation!

I hope all went well in the afternoon, and I completely expect Whitney to have won it all, with Sebastian and others putting in stellar times (lots of good drivers!). I also hope that those in "Spec SE-R" had fun!

In a few weeks, there will be another rallyX, and hopefully at Kevin's (that was the purpose of the Saturday date). I more than likely won't be able to make anymore with the birth of our second daughter in 2-3 weeks, so I hope eveyone has fun!

Thanks to the VPs, students, and competitors today! I think everyone did a great job, and I hope the course was well liked!

The whole weekend was great! Thanks to all that made it happen.

I admit the school Saturday gave Mike Jackson and I a huge advantage over Les and Dave.

I wish I had Les' .... guts to push the Laser as hard as he does.
