Can anyone recommend a device to collect stats for each autocross or rallycross run? I'm looking for something that's a good value, better than what we have, which is nothing, but nothing too fancy.

wouldnt you need to outfit your car with laptop and gps? not sure how well it would work in rallyX with all the bumps and stuff.

Ray and i have gps devices on our phones that work pretty well. iphone also had apps that you can track points every 10m or so.

Agree with Kourosh that you would need something GPS-based if you wanted to use it for rallyX. Accelerometer-based devices would be confounded by the bumps, but generally work fine for autoX.

We've got an old G-Analyst laying around that was basic but decent. Combined with Geez software you could get some good ideas of how you were doing, particularly if you had a codriver whose runs you could compare against.

I'd sell you both for cheap, if cheap is your goal, but they are both way past obsolete.

You might look into this since it is self contained and doesn't have accelerometers. Does autocross and track. Email Ed (the owner) to ask about RallyX

http://www.maxqdata.com/MQGPS.htm

I have a accelerometer/gps Quantum but had to "soft mount" it to deal with chassis/engine vibrations of the formula car. Don't know how it would deal RallyX vibrations.

I didn't realize that GEEZ software worked with G-Analyst data . . . but didn't really have room for the G-Analyst in the formula car in any case. I still have one of each.

Free software, works pretty well too. Best for track, but good enough to get down to tenth of a second comparisons for AX.

Buy a $35 5Hz Bluetooth GPS and use a Windows Mobile Phone or PDA ($60+ off ebay). I bought a used Dell Axim (for $108, but has WiFi and 640x480 screen - not necessary for this usage) and it works great.

I used this at the NCAC and it worked pretty good, though I was wanting hundreths of a second on the lap time / splits comparisons. It may be in the software, I just haven't spent any time to figure it out yet. Regardless, a very good analysis tool and pretty cheap, too.

+1 on this. It works great and the data analysis that comes with it is very good.

20hz sampling for OBII and GPS. This is from a 5 hz sampling rate and a tri-axle accelerometer:

Thanks for posting the images, that's just what I was looking for! Too bad it doesn't run on the iPhone :-( It galls me to buy a Windows mobile phone, but heck, its still cheaper than a dedicated package. Can you recommend a particular Bluetooth GPS?

Thanks, I'll check that out. I purchased Harry's Lap Timer, and the problem has been the built-in GPS in the iPhone has a resolution of 100-300 feet, making the information regarding the path of the vehicle to be inaccurate. The accelerometer is very accurate, though, although I'm not quite sure what to do with the information.

Anyway, I'm glad I checked and Harry just added support for an external GPS-- this shows the difference in the data quality.

Looks like I'll be able to stay on the iPhone after all...

if you find an affordable external GPS that plugs into the bottom of iphone (or bluetooth), let me know. i think having one for running and to use for occasional automotive fun-ness would be nice.

That's the kicker... The cheap GPS hardware requires a jailbroken phone, which I'm not willing to risk, and the TomTom GPS/iPhone holder is $120!

&@(#&. Still cheaper than a dedicated solution, but its starting to look cheaper to just buy a cheap Windows phone just for this.

g-tac for the iphone has good reviews (better than dynoliscious), I'm gonna try it next year for autocross. Not sure how well it will work for rallycross though.

Different price points for the hardware but MaxQdata now has iPhone support and a new lower price 10Hz Quantum.

The iPhone apps are free I believe (i.e. included in the price of the hardware).
