Hey I've been wanting a set of scales for occasional use for a long time. Both to weigh cars out of curiosity and the occasional corner weighting. Problem is they are pricey. Sure I know that we have several great club sponsors with scales available, but I'm a DIY kind of guy, and it's not worth paying just to "see" what a car weighs from time to time.

So would anyone be interested in going in on a set of scales? I'd say that the scales could just travel from house to house for whoever needs them next. Just would need to promise to keep them safe, inside, in good condition, etc.

I have been shopping and this "budget" set from Jegs looks like it would do the trick. I think if we had 7 people at $100 each we'd be able to do it. Let's say max 10.

Also let's keep it within 50 miles of the triangle if possible. I'd set up a group email so anyone can quickly query the group to see who has them and how to get them.

Reply here if you would be in or if you have any ideas or concerns.

i think that's a great idea, i'm in for a share. could also potentially bring them to track or autox events and let people weigh their cars for a nominal fee, ten bucks or so, to help defray the cost.

Mike,

I would be willing to go in on a set even if it were just two people.

I live close but only need to corner weight a few times each year.

Let me know.

I'd be interested but would prefer the Intercomp, if only to have a larger set of spares available if one pad got trashed somehow.

I'm not "in" but something to keep in mind is "scale ramps" etc. so the car can be safely (for the scales) rolled on and off them and you don't have to worry about sideways movement as the suspension settles from a jack.

I'd do that for $100.

Sounds like were are getting pretty close. Mike?

Any recommendations on how we work this deal?

I too would prefer the Intercom system.

So it sounds like so far no one has come up w/ any reasons _not_ to do this, eh? Sure, let me summarize the list and make some comparisons of pricing.

Can anyone do some price shopping for the Intercomp system? Find a good deal somewhere?

FYI just counted here is the list so far. Anyone need to bail out?

I do think we could support 10 people with shared scales... If possible I'd like to keep my investment to max $120 or so. Also if someone is willing to be primary owner and hold some equity on this, we could pull the trigger at 7 for $100 each and let a few more people onboard later. Or we could do a "scale day" at someone's house, or an event, and chare $10 or $20 to recoup any additional. Just some ideas.

I'm thinking about a set of coilovers to run in 2011 and go STX w/ the mustang. I know there is adjustablility w/ a coilover setup. Realistically, how much weight can you "adjust" from coilovers? 100-200lbs? I think I can join this if you wait till after the new year as most of my cash is accounted for in presents for the big red guy.

I know that doesn't help much, but I would like to buy in, but just not now. I could see maybe having the extra cash late next year.

I think that you just adjust it so that the cross-corner weights are equal, not for a specific number of pounds, but I've only read about it.

I've only found the Intercomp system for $999-$1049; there doesn't appear to be a big competitive market in the automotive scale business. There are some mechanical models in the $250 range, but I'd rather have the electronic ones. There are some used sets on ebay, but automotive scales appear to hold their value better than iPhones; they are all expensive. Given the limited use that these will be put to, I'd be fine with saving a few $ on the Proform set.

The custodian of the scales can be anyone, as long as that person has someone at their house most days. I travel a lot, but there's usually someone at the house that could let you get them. Single people who travel a lot might not be a good choice. Or we could just leave them with whoever last used them; that way the person that uses them the most will generally already have them.

If we're all in the Raleigh area, then we just need to give the OP the $ and let him order them. I can drop off the money as soon as tomorrow if we want to pull the trigger on this. I'm ready to corner-balance the LeMons car for optimum crapbox handling!

I can also get a set of race ramps. I know a guy that sells them and I think that he's got a set that I can pick up for cheap.

Additionally I can set up a calendar on a forum that I run ( www.carolinahondas.com ) so we can keep track of who's got them and who needs them for contact and scheduling purposes.

I've got a set of Intercomp scales. Only selling because we went to the wireless ones. They are in GREAT shape and have a case for them. Currently advertised for $900. I'd let this group have them for $850.
