So I'm setting up the MR2 with some safety gear for next season. In looking at harnesses, anyone know why this one is less than 1/2 the price of every other 6pt?

because it's latch and link, not camlock

I *assume* both methods are just as safe, so it's just a difference in ease of use? Is the camlock worth the extra bucks?

That one also does not appear to have a pull type length adustment system on the shoulder and lap belts. That would make it difficult for more than 1 driver to use the belts since adjusting them would be quite time consuming. IMHO I'd pay the difference for a cam lock buckle set with pull down shoulder strap adjusters and pull up lap belt adjusters. Just from an ease of use standpoint, it would be a worthwhile investment considering the number of times you buckle and unbuckle the harness when AXing.

that is the only difference. If the car is stock and only used for AX, the six point might be tough to mount. I had the five point patch type in my MR2. As for getting in and out, what three times per AX? I would go with the latch :-)

For track get the cam set up.

Ab-so-dam-lute-ly. I'd buy the camlocks even at triple the price.

Before buying... find someone who still has some latch/link sets and try to get out of them quickly.

It's a safety issue for me... the cost of a camlock is pennies compared to what it might cost you if your car were to catch fire.

I suppose with practice, one could get out of a L&L system just as quick.

What is the purpose of the car? Is it for track or AX/Street?

I agree with Jim P. If this is for autox, you'll be fine. If you are looking to get on track, then I would move towards the camlock.

The car is going to see mostly HPDE's (2 driver) and an occasional AX. For the street I still have the stock belts. Chris built my roll bar and put in mounts for a 6pt.

I actually tried a Simpson Latch and Link last night that we never installed in the Starlet. It takes some getting used to. Stacy brings up a good point about getting out fast, you have to pull off the velcro tab before you can pull up on the release...it was hard without gloves on. Camlock is sounding good.

So, let me open this can of worms - are all camlocks created equal? Are some brands better (easier, safer) than others?

You have race seats for both driver and passenger that will accommodate the six point harness?

I have the G-Force FIA belts with cam-locks in the Camaro. The price is right and have been quiet happy with them. I have them for both the driver and passenger (even though there is no passenger seat and I have not had a passenger in a few years). But just in case, I bought two sets.

The spare race seat is nice for Wii.

Not sure why you guys have so much trouble with latch + link belts.

:P

I've had and used both, and as long as they're installed and adjusted correctly, I can tell no difference in the "escape time" of the latch + link belts vs. the camlocks.

Granted, the lock part of most camlock belts is smaller than most latch and link, but that's not usually a huge deal.

For me it is easier to hook everything up with the cam lock when I have the helmet and hans device on.

IMHO no not all camlocks are created equal. I much prefered the operation of the G-Force camlock we had in the Miata over the Simpson we had in the Celica. The adjusters on the G-Force also worked easier and smoother. I have not been very impressed with the quality of Simpson products I've used (harness, shoes, helmet) since Bill left the company, which surprised me.

I got a pair of Sparco Sprint 5 seats. I'll post the setup once I take some pics.
