If you weren't at dyno day you missed a good time.

Wow. Wish I could've been there. So, what does 237 whp in a Miata translate to at the flywheel? Oh, and that Prelude tach is scary - was that where the rev limiter barged in & stopped the fun?

Any plans to do an awd dyno day? I'd like to show off my 120 whp beast!

AWD dyno day...

Sure, whever someone with AWD wants to coordinate one.

http://www.stealth316.com/2-awddynos.htm

This seems to be a somewhat up to date list of places that you can go for the dyno day.

237 whp translates to about 280 at the flywheel...

It's about 273hp at the crank (and that's only running 10 psi !!!!) with the standard assumption of 15% drivetrain loss. Some dynos can measure drivetrain loss, but I don't think this one could...

Some of us want to see what Jim's car could do on 15 psi (and pump gas)

And yes, that means Kent Young has over 400 hp at the crank in auto-x trim.

Hey, I put a whopping 94 hp to the wheels, Kevin. You don't want any of that

Actually, it's about 263 at the crank. Several Miatas (NA and boosted) have been measured to show about a 26hp loss through the drivetrain. This is independent of HP level. There have been several discussions on various boards about this and for those that have had a chance to actually measure it, it always seems to hold true. The “15%” rule is generally a good starting point for a stock car but it doesn’t translate with increased HP figures. At least for Miatas…

I’ve datalogged my car @15psi before and it made about 270hp at the wheels. Of course, the same “road dyno” showed my current power level to be about 220hp at the wheels @10psi so that figure is probably a little bit low. I need to actually measure my wheel/tire diameter (instead of estimating it from a standard calculation) to get more accurate results. Either way, it’s way too much @15psi to put to the ground at a typical auto-x course in 1st/2nd gear. Or maybe I just need more rear tire! :P

Needless to say, at slightly above the 300rwp level, Miatas are known to start grenading trannys and rearends depending on the abuse level. While those power levels are fine for 3rd gear and higher use (or mild launches), it’s probably not a good idea to run that way for extended periods of time in auto-x or drag trim. Unless you have a pile of spare drivetrain parts lying around… And are fond of excessive tire smoke...

Hey, just think Tom, adding 26hp to your 94hp figure and you come out with 120hp!!! That's a whopping 4hp *more* than Mazda's rating of 116hp for the 1.6L engines!!! Dude, you got a ringer there!!!

I guess Mazda's trend of overrating hp figures is just a recent thing! :D

I can't believe that a car with half as many cylinders made more power than my big American V-8! How embarassing!

It was fun though, to see that my car will go 130 mph at redline in 4th gear!!!
