i need a battery jump box, any particular recommendations? something with a built in inverter would be nice.

In my experience, they seem to be really hit and miss as far as longevity.

I have a ~$100 "professional" type that worked well for about 1.5 years, then the battery stopped holding a charge, so now it's a big paperweight. I have a ~$35 Prestone branded box that I've had for at least 5 years and it still works great. It works so well that a year or so ago I bought another Prestone branded unit to replace it since I knew it was gonna die soon. The new box is dead, lasted about 4 months, while the old one is still going strong.


Can't help with the inverter function, none of mine have had it.

I've never owned one. Primarily because of the concerns Bret has experienced. They have a very low capacity battery. Maybe sealed lead acid. Almost all (if not all) batteries are very dependent on both the initial battery quality, the charger circuit, and the time since manufacture. Plus, shelf life is much better if kept charged. Think about the distribution chain for these products and given the various "price points" the quality of the charging circuits in some of them. Scared me off.

If you really need one, maybe Batteries Plus would be a good choice assuming they turn their inventory relatively rapidly (don't know if they sell these products but they do sell sla batteries).
