Posting for a co-worker.

2001 E46 convertible, 100,000 miles, seems to eat the rear tires. The center of the tread is corded, but outside shoulder looks good and inside shoulder is about 1/2 worn. Decent tire life at 30-40,000 miles (4 years), but very odd wear (fronts look great, and were never rotated front to back).

Tires are probably not over inflated (adding air is not a normal part of his routine).

Any know E46 issues that manifest this way? I see reports of trailing arm bushings...

Scott

he may not have added air, but that doesn't mean they haven't always been over inflated.

i don't know of any suspension mishap that would cause that type of wear...over inflation would be my only guess.

Hmmm, I've been having rear tire wear issues with my E36 as well. I think I have the source of my issues identified though... having too much fun :D

Sorry, no help.

This sounds very likely.

Johnson Lexus of Durham routinely inflates my RX's tyres to about 6 psi over spec, presumably so that the typical Lexus SUV driver doesn't have to check them between services. It would surprise me if 1) that's not a deliberate policy,; 2) that's the only dealer to do the same thing.

Somebody adds air to his tyres at some point or he'd be running on rims. I'm guessing whoever does so assumes he won't be checking them, and makes sure he doesn't run low.

From two years of lurking M3 forums, the other big two (excluding overinflation) are the rtab's and the shocks. E46's shock life is usually under 75k or less in some cases.

Hmm I have a 2001 E46 convertible with 100k miles. My answer is "they all do that". Of course it is exacerbated by wide tires, overinflation, a heavy right foot, and soft tires.

I don't see RTABs or shocks contributing to this problem. If someone could explain this I'd appreciate it.

I routinely was cording autocross tires on my E36 M3 in the center of the rear tires. To me it's an indication that (a) my suspension is set up correctly and (b) I am having a lot of fun.

If tire wear is a concern drive a Camry and put 500 treadwear tires on it :)

Sounds fair enough. He did get 4 years and 30K+ miles out of them, for me, that is an eternity.

Oh, they were 500 treadwear tires.... Some sort of Michelin all season.
