I have two fire extinguishers in the rally car that I've had and, thankfully, never used for 2 years. Where can I get them inspected and re-certified? For hopefully a lot less than the cost of replacements.

Simon, it would be worth checking out Pye-Barker here in Raleigh. They inspect all the extinguishers in my store every couple of years, put a new tag on it, and send us the bill...

The club uses Fire Extinguisher Sales and Service in Morrisville for the ones in the trailer.

Like Matt, I would recommend Pye Barker. Another alternative would be BFPE. We have used both at the airport. We have to have ours done every year.

Our annual inspections run somewhere less than $10 per extinguisher. Now that might be a volume discount as we are usually doing 30 - 40 at a time, but I wouldn't expect it to be too much more. All they do is check the powder level and pressurize the tank. Not too much to is unless you need repairs (gauges, hoses, etc.)

Just out of curiosity, does NASA require the inspection, or is it just for piece of mind?

I've never seen NASA RallySport ask for certification at scrutineering but the NRS regs state...

3.6.3.3 Maintenance
Evidence must be produced that the fire extinguisher has been
purchased or recharged within the preceding two years.

And Rally America regs state...

5.6.C.2. Dry chemical extinguishers shall bear certification that they have
been serviced annually. Each dry chemical extinguisher shall be
removed at scrutineering and shaken to ensure that the chemical is
not compacted in the extinguisher. All extinguishers shall be
equipped with a visible indication of the state of charge. All
extinguishers shall be approved for vehicular use by the DOT, U.S.
Coast Guard, SFI or FIA.

My extinguishers are 2 years old but they look in good condition. I have a Rally America event coming up next week and I didn't want to be tripped up by this.

Thanks for everyone's help.

Simon

Like driving in a Rally wouldn't keep the extinguisher shaken

You are smart to be prepared for this- as you know, STPR has notoriously tough tech inspection.

Are you going to be running under a NASA license this year?
