Any one have a portable air compressor that is more powerfull than the one I have that I can borrow? The one is rated at 125 psi and is a 5 gallon tank. I need to get the crank bolt of the Del Sol and the last time this happend I used a more powerfull air compressor and it broke the bolt loose.

Thanks!

I have one, but you will need to bring the car to me. I could loan out the Ingersoll Rand impact gun, that made a bigger difference in my garage. Harbor Freight gun = stuck bolts. IR gun at the same PSI = taken apart.

David, you are welcome to mine, although I'm not sure how we would get it over there. We could try and load it in my wife's pathfinder if you want to help me try.

When I did the timing belt on my sister's 2000 Civic, I needed to pull the starter, put a pickle fork in the flywheel gear and hop up and down on a 36" breaker bar on the crank pulley bolt. It worked like a charm. This was all due to having to do the timing belt and other stuff on her car in my Mom's garage with just the tools I could bring.

Unless you can find someone with a gun that is rated at 600 ft lbs in reverse (that will likely put out somewhere around 450 ft lbs consistently), you won't get it off with an air impact. - AB

I would agree that its the gun you are using and not the compressor. Try to buy or borrow a better air gun.

Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.

Scott What size is your air compressor would it fit in the back of my passat(either in the trunk to back seat?). The Gun I am using is a Snap On gun that has worked the last time I did the timing belt, I had to get a differnt compressor to get it off.

Also mike thanks for the offer but your Air tank is huge an I would rather save that as a last resort, hopefully Scotts Air tank and Gun might do the trick.

I *think* mine might look small compared to Scott's.

David, I'm pretty sure Scott's compressor is nearly as tall as you are.

And, IIRC, is bolted to the floor. - AB

Not bolted to the floor, but it ought to be. It's a 5hp 60 gallon upright.

Its all about CFM, a gun can be rated at 600ftlbs, but that rating is at a specific and maintainable CFM. If you are using a compressor that cant provide that then it wont matter what the gun 'can do'.

Also be aware those coil hoses, the yellow springy ones, highly restrict air flow and can also limit air flow even in the compressor isnt

Thats a good point regarding the hose. If you have a 125 PSI tank and your compressor is not running (i.e. the tank has enough reserve), then it's probably either your compressor is not filling up the tank to max pressure or your hose is restricting flow.

Those self coiling hoses also quickly age harden and suddenly blow apart sending plastic shrapnel flying. BTDT They should not be allowed to be sold IMHO.
