So I'm finally tackling the cam timing on the SVT today, and read up that I *must* loosen both the cam gears to do this properly, even if I take the belt off and start from step 1.

Problem is, the intake uses a torx bolt, and the variable cam-timing mechanism shrouds the bolt so I have to use a socket to get to it.

I just picked up the biggest I can get from the local Sears (E-16) and it is too small. The only others I can find are online.

Anyone have one or know a source that would carry a larger size? The ones Sears list online are Gearwrench brand.

Thanks!

I've used a plain old allen key on torx fittings before.

Thanks, but this is a torx bolt. I played with some sockets to see if anything was close, but the amount of torque I'll have to use to break it loose makes me think I shouldn't play around with the wrong tool.

Harbor Freight has an E-torx assortment.

I've got a couple of sets- but I'm not sure how big they go.......

EDIT:

here's one of the sets I have (looks like it only goes to E16):

It does say that E18 + E20 sockets are available from Lisle separately...

I think I got my set at Autozone or Pep Boys, but that was many years ago. I'd make the rounds of the discount auto parts places, one of them is bound to have something.

OR, you might want to try to find this "Master" set:

$32.95 MSRP

EDIT #2- if you strike out completely, you might want to check out the Raleigh Flea Market- there's a tool guy there every weekend, in a big tent outside. He's got alot of the HF-type stuff, and he *might* have what you need.

Kendt, I have the E-18 and E-20. PM me if you want to meet up tomorrow. When I did the Celica engine, I had to buy a huge set of these, for all of the studs in the block as well as the head bolts were reverse torx, so I have a set that goes from E-4 (yes, incredibly small!) to E-20 (maybe higher, but I did pull both of these from the bucket of them I have). - AB

I got a Torx set on ebay to remove my airbag module. Mine is the male version though (T-#). I looked all around locally to try to find the correct size and eBay turned out to be the easiest.

What you're referring to is standard torx. What Kendt needs is the female version of what you have. - AB
