So, I’m looking for recommendations for brake pads for the new to me mustang. I see that BHP is out of biz, so what’s the hot ticket for a set of street/autox pads. I’d like to just keep these installed on the car and not do the flip like I had been doing with the 328. Hawk HP+ still a decent pad to go with? What other choices are out there now that’s good for this car? Advice is appreciated!!

Rodney, check out the PBR/Axxis ULT / Ultimates (sold under some other names too, I think, some with wildly varying prices, though the compound is exactly the same). We're running these on the Miata now, and they've worked well for both Street, AX, and Malia has used them at both CMP and VIR-F with little to no fade. They have much better bite than the Hawk HPS's, but are very streetable as well - so in the same neighborhood as the HP+.

Obviously for a heavier car they probably wouldn't fare as well on track as they do with the Miata, but since you're targeting AX anyway, they should work well. They are also significantly cheaper than the Hawks. If you decide you want to check into these, send me a PM and I'll look up the place I just ordered a second set from - they were ~20/pair cheaper than most of the other places I found.

+1 on Ultimates - have them on my M3. Cheap and work good. A little dusty.

I run Carbotech Bobcats on my big-ass Trans Am & Excursion. They'll be going back on the R-package Miata too.

They hardly dust on the T/A but can't say that for the Excursion, but what do you want for a 7500 lb vehicle? They have really good wear too. The Trans Am still has the ones I used to autox on and I think they lasted for 2 years on the Autocross Miata and it's a daily driver.

When it's time for new shoes, I'm staying with the Bobcats.

Kevin, are those the same Bobcats I put on it, or is this a new set?

I liked them a lot. When the time comes, they're on the list of pads to consider for the S2000, along with the PFC Z-Rated.

That's damn good. I **think** I put those on at around 80K or so...been a few years now, so hard to say for sure. How many miles does that make - with most of them towing a house around behind?

I think it's around 120k. Honestly, I've been real impressed with longevity of Bobcats. They work great cold, don't over modulate, fairly clean.

Vincent, can you elaborate? Suck how?

Bearing in mind this car sees zero track duty. Autocross/street only.

Thanks!

Check out KNS Brakes in Cary on the Track Sponsor page.
He sells Hawk (HP+ is a great street/AX pad) and Porterfield
(as well as Ferodo and SP) but unfortunately not PFC.

Be sure to say you are a THSCC member for the club sponsor discount.

Rodney, call Sam Strano and ask him what he recommends. His Hawk prices are in line with Tire Rack and he offers free shipping.

I agree that the car feels like it could use a more aggressive pad. On the other hand, I seem to get slower after Karl swapped in more aggressive front pads on his S2000. Maybe it's good for me to brake early :)

Art, I think you've got the chronology mixed up. I'm nearly certain I had the BHPs on the car all last year. If I didn't, the pads I had on there before were Hawk HP Plus. I know a lot of folks like them, but I hated them. Too much like an on/off switch for me. I sold them to Joe Magyar.

I thought the BHP pads were new at the DC Pro. I wasn't able to recalibrate for the shorter braking distances, and instead of trail braking into turns, was fighting the push from having the weight come off the front tires just as I turned in.

That's my excuse. Don't screw it up for me

I run various Carbotech compounds on both Cobras.

99 Cobra on track: XP10s front, XP8s back

01 Cobra on street: AX6 front (their autocross compound -- good pad for street use on a performance car)
