I replaced the pads on my wife's 2001 Odyssey today. Yes I know, Thanksgiving evening and I am replacing the front brakes. She had noticed some grinding the last two days so I figured pads were in order. When I pulled the pads off of the driver side, the inner one had worn to the shim in a couple of places (hence the grinding, I presume).

Anyhoo, I replaced the front pads and went to bed them in. The grinding that I had heard was a lot worse and actually to the point of hearing is when the wheel turns, not just when the brake is applied. The van stops fine and ABS will kick in like normal on the hard stops. The noise is very unnerving.

So my question is, do I have a bad caliper? Are the rotors in need of replacement (the van has 168K on it and to my knowledge, they have never been turned, they have never felt warped). Is there metal on the back of the disc where the shim hit and it needs to wear off?

Thoughts, advice?

Sounds like you might have other issues.Put the odyssey up on jack stands so you can rotate the wheels and see if the grinding is there when you turn them by hand. If the wheels turn freely look at the drive train for the source of the grinding. I'm assuming the odyssey is fwd.

Make sure that a rock didn't get kicked between the rotor and dust shield.

I've replaced wheel bearings over a noise I came to find out was one of the clips that holds the pads in place in the caliper rubbing the rotor. It was more of a squeal than a grind though.

Thoughts:

The conditions that Wes and Stephen described should make a high pitched squeal.
A worn CV joint should make a knocking sound, but check for torn boots anyway.
A bad wheel bearing will make nasty crunching noises, until you go around a corner and it magically gets quiet for a moment. You know the official autocross tech test for a bad bearing.
An incorrectly installed flex line will coil up like curly fries and rub silently against its mounting bracket until it fails. Oh wait, that's my Taurus, not your Odyssey :(

Advice:

You need another T-Bird. Holland Hale (ex-THSCC pres) drove me to lunch today in this one:

I think your wife will like that a lot more than the Odyssey. She can call a cab to haul the kids around :)

Well, turns out I am a big fat moron.... I somehow managed to put the inner pad on the driver's front in backwards. Hence the hideous noise. The pad was not damaged and I had picked up rotors preemtively, so the rotors were replaced, pads installed correctly and all is well. I guess I was going too fast with the install, not to mention my light at the time, left a little to be desired....

Oh well, live and learn I suppose...

That must have been making quite a noise. :)
