So I no long have access to an alignment rack now that my dad has changed occupations. So since I don't know who does the best job and listens to what you want to have done. Who would you recommend. I will probably be a horrible client since I have done my own alignments for the last 7 years on a computerized Hunter alignment rack but no access means I have to pay someone else to do it. Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance.

I've had several performance alignments done at Digital Chassis in N. Durham and have been very happy with the quality of work, etc. - it's a one man operation, the guy's name is Brad Moyer and phone no. is 384-7070. It's been a few years since I last had one done, so I'm not sure he's still in the business or what he's charging, and he tends to be a little slow returning calls as he stays pretty busy, but I'd definitely recommend him highly if you want a custom, high precision alignment using the high end Hunter equipment.

Another option is Performance Chassis in Cary (phone 466-0553) - they're a THSCC sponsor, and Mark, the owner, has been involved in the THSCC track program for several years. I haven't needed a precision alignment since he started doing them, but I'd probably go to him next time I need one. Like Digital Chassis, Performance Chassis also has a high end Hunter alignment machine. Mark used to do all the performance alignments himself and does whatever settings you want. I noticed another guy who works for Mark was doing an alignment when I was there a few days ago - don't know him but, knowing Mark, I'm sure he's also very qualified.

Another sponsor for the V Foundation event is Auto Pro To Call (http://www.AutoProToCall.com) in Chapel Hill. I might not necessarily take my car there for a performance alignment *except* that Oscar White works there (if he hasn't moved -- yet). Oscar was a member of THSCC when I joined and, though he's fallen away from autoX, I think he's still doing track stuff and work on his own track car. I took the Miata and the MINI there last year. I just told him to max out the camber on the MINI, but he picked the Miata specs for me and said if I didn't like the alignment he picked, he'd change it. So, if you want to try there, be sure you're talking with Oscar and tell him you're a THSCC member and that I told you to call him, blah, blah, blah.

I like Mark and I hate to say anything against him, but he told me this himself and I think others should know too. I took the Neon in for an alignment, and he refused to adjust the front camber. He said because he had to take the wheels off to adjust it and then get it back on the plates for another measurement, it took too much time to do and it "wasn't worth it".

I see his point of course, and it's his business, but I've had dozens of alignments on that car (not there though) and never heard anyone complain about it, charge extra, or even make mention. My front camber is easy to change, using eccentric bolts. And getting my front camber set is one of the main reason I get alignments in the first place.

So if you have McPherson strut front suspension (and I know you don't, Keith, but many of us do), be advised that Mark will not adjust your front camber.

I would think that there are more cars than not that require removal of the front wheels for adjusting the camber. I have the same setup as Carl and had my alignment done four times last year...$50 each time for 2-wheels to any setting I wanted. Sometimes it pays not to live in the big city I guess.

You may want to talk to Karl Shultz, I seem to recall he took his S2000 to Oscar at AutoProToCall a couple times recently had some issues.

Before we got the Solstice, we always had our alignments done at Sturdevant Tire in Pittsboro. They understood racer's needs and would work as long as needed to give me exactly whatever specs (and sometimes they were pretty extreme...) I asked for.
Hendrick Pontiac in Cary now does our alignments, and once I trained the tech to understand the precision a racer expects, he now adjusts any cars I send them to the owner's specs. If anyone would like to go there please let me know and I'll call and make sure it will be done right. They will work on any make or model.

Just a followup on Sturdivants...I live nearby and know those folks well. Very well. They'll do what you want and usually even let you sit in the car if you want while they do it. However, they do over-use the impact gun, IMHO, when they should be using the torque wrench. I'd still trust them with a street car (and, well, I do), but for race cars I don't as much. We generally string those ourselves now anyway, but I thought I'd let people know what I thought.

Sturdivants was much more racer friendly back in the days of Oscar and has faded slowly since, IMHO.

I wouldn't quite go so far as that. The alignment I got from those guys was dead on perfect - it just slipped out of alignment over time, and I ended up with an alignment that wasn't what I thought it was. At least, that's what I believe to have happened.

In other news, the last alignment I got was from Mark at Performance Chassis. After experimenting with zero toe in the back, Art, Eric and myself all found the car to be pretty wild. I took it back to Mark and had him toe the rear in a bit, and he only charged me about half price to make the adjustment, which was nice of him.

Today I got another alignment from Performance Chassis. The "new guy" (Dan? I'm horrible at remembering names.) did a great job and is obivously as much of an enthusiast as Mark. He called me twice to discuss what he was going to do when my car wouldn't make the specs I first requested, as it turns out the light front end wreck that the previous owner disclosed wasn't quite so light and caused a touch of frame damage. The price was fair and he got done early. All told another great experience.

And he adjusted camber at all four corners with no apparent unhappiness.
