My neighbor has an 87 Toyota Pickup that Merchants says has a blown head gasket.

The truck is probably worth less than Merchants would charge even if they were willing to do it.

Is it something that he and I can tackle or is there anyone out there that might like to have a go? He is willing to pay a reasonable sum for the task.

Thanks.

Simon

That's a really easy job for someone with half a day to spare. I also give it a 50% chance that it isn't the head gasket, rather a broken chain tensioner resulting in a loose chain that cuts a hole in the front cover, opening a water passage to the crank case (assuming the diagnosis is simply water in the oil).

Scott's statement is especially true if the motor is a 22R. It's super easy to work on.

i would also bet that. you can take the v-cover off and look down ther with a flash light and check this out. Eitehr way the covers new are not that expensive.

Followup: My neighbor's father has taken on the job. They're asking me if we know of a shop that can boil out and mill the head.

I'm not quite sure what boil out means. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Simon

I'd take it to Cylinder Head Specialties in Wake Forest.

(919) 556-0775 Along Capital Blvd.

They did nice work on my old Celica, and have done plenty of R-series motor heads.[/code]

CHS pretty much seems to be the defacto recommendation for head work on here - I know at least a few people that have had good experiences with them.
