Straight water cools better than antifreeze mixtures (better heat transfer, admittedly, with a lower boiling point), and it doesn't take a lot of antifreeze in the system to keep things from freezing on a record cold morning in NC. 2-1 and 3-1 water-antifreeze is good to 0 and 10 F respectively.

Scott is right...water is the better coolant, and I believe it's fine to mix with the "red" stuff. As for what brands...I dunno. I just played dumb and asked for red coolant when I had to buy some in the past.
Chances are that one of the plastic radiator end tanks is leaking slightly. I know that my Jetta has a very small coolant leak, and I'm betting it's an end tank. The car never cracks the 190 deg mark on the temp gauge, so that just tells me it stays w/in the range (probably up to about 210-215). So...until that needle moves, I'm just going to add a little water every few months.
