Many modern cars cant be effectively bled with any 'power' bleeder. Mostly due to the ABS pump/system. On curent VW's you have to use VAG-COM to cycle the ABS pump while bleeding to get a compelte flush.

The GM cars require a Tech II bleeder done at dealership if and only if you have air trapped in ABS. If you haven't the Motive unit is fine for bleeding from track weekends.

I agree with Jim. The Motive is unpredictable and is a PITA to get sealed properly with that freaking little chain. As far as evacuating the master cyl. resevoir, I use a turkey baster syringe :) , although I do that only before the first event. During the season, I just push a few ounces of fluid through before each event with Sharon on the pedal. I use the Motive only when there's no help.

That actually gets easier with practice Art. And here's another tip - test fit the adapter with an empty power bleeder before filling it with fluid. If you can hear air hissing out of it, you need to check your fittings.


I borrowed your Motive bleeder two years ago, and could never get the "universal" adapter to seal on my MC. Last year I bought one with the rigid 3-eared old-Ford-specific adapter. That one seals pretty well, but it tends to work loose, so you have to keep checking it. I was in the house watching State lose a Friday afternoon heartbreaker in the 2007 ACC tournament when the bleeder cap decided to pop off and caused the aforementioned mess. Let's just say that I was 1-1 for the afternoon :)

You don't need any of the fancy equipment to effectively bleed brakes. Nor do you need a helper.

Take a plastic soft drink bottle, drill a hole for the tube to snugly fit through the middle of the cap and a smaller, offset hole through the cap for an air vent. Make sure there's about 1" - 3/4" brake fluid in the bottom of the bottle so that the tube end in the bottle won't see air. You've just made a check valve.

Connect the hose to the bleeder screw, open the bleeder screw and start pumping the brake pedal. Close the bleeder screw back when you're done bleeding the caliper. You can do the whole job by yourself, no helper needed. It's that easy.

If you want to get fancy, you can put a hose clamp around the tube just under the cap to ensure that the tube won't slip and pull the tube end out of the fluid. Add 8"-10" coat hanger wire around the bottle neck ending with a hook so you can hang it on a spring while you bleed and not have to worry about knocking it over.

Done.

I use an old glass baby food jar with a hose stuck through a hole in the lid. I have helped my dad bleed brakes with this since he had a new Mk I Tiger.

I use a similar method with hose into a bottle to do the bulk of my brake bleeding, but I still think this method has an exposure in that it still allows air to enter through the bleed screw threads when not under pressure. I typically finish off my bleeding with help of a pedal pumper for this reason.
