So I'm getting ready for CMP next week. That place was/maybe still is a brake killer.

I'm cooking a brake ducting application for the SM2 Miata.

Some SPA ducts fitted to the new Garage Vary spoiler I just installed, 3" silicon brake ducting, and spindle ducts.

I'm leaning towards cobbling these spindle ducts to some stock Miata dust shields.

I would be going with the Light Weight versions in black.

Any body been there, done that? Any other ideas. Links to Miatas ducted as such?

Thanks in advance for assistance.

Kevin,

This stuff is not cheap. But it takes the abuse of constantly being flexed and doesn't tear up. My other Z06 was ducted up with this. They lasted the whole season and will get installed on the replacement Z06.

I tried using the cheap black stuff that is sold in a lot of kits. It tore up in no time flat. Wire popping through. Went through the stuff in a few events. There is just too much flexing and the inner part of the wheel hits them when I'm at full lock. So it was worth the price for me.

Wander around their website. There are a few things I found that are used in aircraft that are very useful for track applications.

Hey Graham,

Thanks for the hose link. I think it's going to be awhile before I tackle this job. After some hands on time last night I came to the distinct conclusion it's going to take way more fab time than I currently have available.

Maybe a winter project....

Kevin,

I have a guy that makes brake duct kits in his spare time for Mustang Cobras and sells them for a very reasonable price (around 80 for hoses, and bolt-on backing plates). If you are interested, I can contact him and see if he is interested in working on a Miata kit.

I cobbled up some makeshift air ducting using the stock backing plates for my old Datsun 280Z. The large tires filled the wheel wells and that coupled with the low ground clearance restricted the hoses to 2" OD. There was simply not enough room for larger hoses. The silicone hose is definitely worth the extra cost. The silicone hose is very much more flexible than the cheaper stuff. Also, the typical black hose does not hold up well when hot, and the hot engine air takes as much of a toll as the higher surface temperatures near the brakes.
