OK, I'm hunting for some new brake pads for the bimmer. My current hawk HP+ have been great so far, but I'm at about 50% pad and I want some fresh pads for the upcoming VIR full in May. The one thing I've noticed about the HP+ is they don't bit well cold, they need just a little heat to make them work.

There's always changes in pads and I figure there's been some upgrades over the last year. I want a pad that will be primarily autox and occasional track. I also have a set of street pads, so dust and noise for the autox pads is not an issue. I'd rather not spend a fortune on the pads, so I'm looking for a great bang for the buck.

Recommendations?

TIA

Paging Matt at BHP!

I'd consider those if they made them for my car - I'm having great luck with Hawk HT-10s on the front and HP+ or HPS in back (whichever set has the most meat at the time) - I'll probably go all HPS for DD/AX and only swap fronts for track.

BHP!!!

He does not show a CR6 listing for your Bimmer but if you can get them you will throw those HP+'s in the trash.

Sent Matt an email asking about the CR6 pads for the bimmer. None were listed on the web site, but I figured what the heck. Well, what do you know.... he had one set of preproduction pads sitting there...SOLD. Should be here next week. Look forward to dropping them on. I'll let you know if there is any difference I can feel after using the HP+ pads.

The difference is astonishing Rodney.

I had HP+ on the S2000 for part of last year. Never liked how grabby they were - too much like an on/off switch. The BHPs, by contrast, still bite plenty hard, but are buttery smooth to modulate. They are stellar - I cannot overstate that.

One thing to keep in mind is that they do generate a lot of dust. However, it is not caustic or corrosive, and rinses off easily.

I have the HP+'s on the Type R right now and I must say that I hate them. They might be OK for track use but they are very hard for me to modulate on the street and at an auto-x.

Hawk HP+ are not track pads. I don't care what Hawk marketing says. Hawk track pads are more like HT14/HT10 or DTC70/DTC60 setup. Any real race pad should beat the HP+ hands down.

I ran the HP+ on my C4 for AX and loved them for that. Sucked on the street. The dust is horrible and messes up wheels and paint permanently once that material sticks. Very corrosive dust.

Looks like I have to wait until end of May to try these BHP pads.

I had mentioned earlier that I was able to buy a set of the BHP cr6 pads for the 328. At VIR F this week, I had some excitement in my 3rd lap on the first session where the brakes faded like crazy, no grip at all. I almost went off on one, but went deep into the turn and was able to stay off the grass. I saw Matt and spoke to him about and he said they should be fine now that they’ve been heated up to track temps. Next session was rainy, so no high speeds and the brakes seemed to work fine. I also took it easy on my 3rd session, so no surprises there.

On the second day of the HPDE on a nice dry track and excellent weather, I was settling down into a nice rhythm and started to bring up the straightaway speeds. I hit turn one at about 115 from the front straight and the fade began again. Just no grip from the cr6 pads from high speed runs. I have to say I’m disappointed considering all of the great comments made on these pads. From a 100, they worked great, but anything more and fad was noticeable. I think I’m going back to the Hawk + or something more track oriented for the next HPDE event.

I will make one comment on the e36 though. I had no issues with brake pedal dropping in this event as opposed to VIR N last year. Someone had mentioned to bleed the brakes right after engaging the ABS and bleed the breaks w/ the engine running. This had something to with keeping the ABS pump active and being able to force air out of it. I did just this and brakes were much better at this event. I will also add to this that I also rotated the front pads after 2 runs in order to keep the pad tapering down. This may have also come into play keeping the brakes in better shape.

Are the CR6 pads supposed to be the autox/track do-all combo pad?

I say there's no such thing. Get some bread and butter track pads like Hawk HT10s and check that box off.

I was pretty hard on the brakes at times in the 2.5RS, and had no problems at all. Subaru Group N rally brakes in front, stock brakes in rear, HP+ all around. Braked at the 3 on the front straight with no problem turning in, occasionally waited a little past the 3, as I wasn't really braking at the limit at the 3. Only going 105-110, though. Braking at the 3 from 105 with standing water on the track was interesting, but I had no trouble turning in and staying on the line. Rallyx experience helped there. I braked harder in other places, where it was safer to do so.

Drove home with them still on the car, and yes, they do suck on the street. Too much pedal travel when cold. I love the HPS front/ HP+ rear on the street, and I'm about to be putting them back that way in a few minutes.

How much does your car weigh, Rodney? How big are the brakes? Did you use the HP+ on track and end up fading them, too?

Never did put the HP+ on the car, was tired of changing the pads from side to side. As for the weight, the car is just under 3100 with out me in the car. The brakes themselves are small compared to the M car. Not sure what the size is between both models. It may be time to go to STX and get the bigger brakes.

Wanna trade for some Axxis Ultimates Jim?

I'm getting ready to shell out for some track pads to do the ITR Expo next weekend, then sell my R. If you want to check out the Ultimates, they are great, although they dust like hell. The fact that I can't use them on track is the only problem.

Even with the bigger brakes, I had fairly significant fade on my brand-new OEM Pagids in my 3rd session of day 1. I was having to get on the brakes no later than 5 on the front stretch, entering at 120. Backed off a bit in later sessions, and later in those sessions. Wasn't out there to win any trophies, so didn't figure it was worth pushing it tooooo hard.

I'll also be looking for new pads before my next event.

I can't say enough good things about PFC01's in front and PFC97's in rear. They just work, all the time. No fade, no deposits, no warping. Just a hair of taper. It's been a long time since I got more than 2 weekends out of a set of pads, and I will with these. They don't have as much torque as others (like Hawks) but I greatly value consistency, rotor friendliness, and fade resistance over bite.

There may be better out there but I haven't found them yet. FYI this is also the first time I'm running a real race pad in the rear, and this may have a lot to do with my happiness with them. If you're fading good brakes, it's time to go to race pads front and rear at the same time.
