I'm looking for a body shop or someone to paint an old car I have. I am not looking for concours or a $6000 job but something a bit better than Macco.
Any body have any experiences in the area?
Thanks
Mark

Hey Mark,

I used Peach Autobody on Capital Blvd (just south of 440) a number of years ago. At least at that time, they offered a number of options (i.e. separate color and clear shots) that Maaco didn't have. They did a good job for the price.

Dont knock Maaco, the one in Cary did my car and for 366 bucks it turned out incredible, it gets compliments wherever I take it.

Ryan,

That does look good, did you have to do the prep work yourself? Last time I looked a Maaco, about 100 years ago, they had different options. One for just shooting the paint, one for if they sanded, etc.

I did do some wetsanding before I took it up to them, however I did a terrible job and they ended up going over the entire car again

They do have quite a few different options etc available, mine was the cheapest paint, and cheapest prep

Ryan's car does look great! ;)

Maaco paint jobs vary a great deal from shop to shop. Based on Ryan's experience- I would think you can't really go wrong using the shop he used. Don't expect a concours paint job, but for the price it's impossible to beat it- you could not even buy the materials to do it yourself for that much.

It's said over and over again, but prep means the difference in a paint job looking like a$$ or looking really good. It doesn't take a huge amount of talent to spray a car without any major runs- but it takes a huge amount of patience to properly prep a car for painting.

Mark Hughes makes a cameo! Mark I'd check with Tunstall Williams in Raleigh. Several folks here have recommended them. I've used them and would do so again. I think Marvin McBride has used them too.

Tunstall Williams has done several cars for my former boss at the glass place. The paint job on his Lincoln town car is 10 years old and still looks good.

I have seen sevaral Macco jobs that looked good new but lost their shine after a couple of years. Quality paint is not cheap.
