$17/gal at teh WalMart, gets good reviews on BITOG.

For some in super abusive environments (REAL race cars), I'd spring for the ultra pimp oil.

Steve, 4 pages? I'll take the over.

pretty sure that will be TWO cold Budweisers there Ryan. without the likes of Rich these days, no one really feels the need for a protracted discussion any more.

Sorry, but misspelling something like this, especially when you're arguing about it, is really just a pet peeve of mine.

Oil? Is that what I'm supposed to use when the gravy boat lights up on my dash?

True story:

about 15 years ago, I was working for DHL, the delivery company. I was (by default) in charge of vehicle maintenance- and most of the drivers knew to tell me when there was something wrong with their vehicle. We had a young lady named Blanche who worked for us, she called on the 2 way radio (!) to ask me what it meant when the "teapot" light was lit up on her dash........I hesitated for a minute then asked her to repeat what she said, because I didn't quite understand what she meant. She repeated that "the teapot light keeps coming on on the dash".

It took me a minute to realize that she was talking about the OIL light- it does kind of look like a teapot (or a magic Genie lamp). I told her to pull over immediately and shut the van off and check the oil. She did, and it was like 3 QTS low (I believe those engines held 6 qts total).

To make things even more interesting, this oil discussion that Blanche and I had about the work van brought up an oil question she had about what kind of oil to use in her ~81 Toyota Cressida. She said it had ~200k miles on it and it was a great car, but she needed to add some oil. I asked her what kind of oil (brand/weight, whatever) was put in it last time it was changed, and she told me they had NEVER changed the oil- they just added oil when it got low!!!!

At least she added Oil and not Tea (or Gravy). :D

Oh, if you DO use Gravy, should it be poultry or beef? I hear that if you have been using beef for a long time and then switch the poultry that engine will start leaking like crazy.

I think I am going to start my own website...

I think I'll leave the mobil 1 in the car and toyota for now...

I think I'll have them tested though, to see if what I've got is working. Does anyone have the contact information where I can have my oil tested?

I will change out my trans fluid and 3rd member oil to hopefully extend the life of my driveline. I'm thinking redline $$$$$

Indeed it was a vette guy and firebird lady that got me thinking about this. I wasn't aware that this had been hashed out already

next time I'll look throught the archieves

Quaker state, (Mustbe good Jeff Gordon uses it

I have it on very good authority that when the Group 44 IMSA Jaguars were sponsored by Quaker State, they'd empty out the Quaker State bottles and fill them with Kendall GT1 so they would look like they used Quaker State at the track.

There was also a local mechanic who said he couldn't tell what oil his customers used, unless it was Quaker State. The wax build-up in the valve covers was always a dead give-away.

With Jeff Gordon's finishing record, either Quaker State doesn't do that anymore, or he's pulling the Group 44 trick. Just because a company sponsors you, doesn't mean you can't use a competing product as long as you don't get caught. After all, do you think Bobby Allison would turn down a free Budweiser?

(Just doing my part to lengthen the thread. A derail to beer sounds like a perfect tactic.)

Jake,

Which oil to use is a never-ending topic on ANY internet forum. I have seen countless threads on svtperformance, corn-carvers, etc. where everyone argues for their favorite. As mentioned earlier, the only true way of knowing if the oil you are using is doing any good is to have it regularly tested by a lab.

With that said, I have run Mobil 1, Royal Purple and a couple of others in the Cobras since new and have never seen a difference. Then again, I change the oil in those cars quite often. For any of my previous Mustangs and trucks, I run dead dinosaur Castrol.

To add to the True Story: While in Daytona on Spring Break in 1991, a buddy in his early- to mid-80s Toyota Tercel was bragging at hitting 200,000 miles on the trip down from GA. I asked what kind of oil he used and how often he changed it. His reply was similar to the lady mentioned, "I add whatever kind of oil I can get when it is a quart low." Not believing him, I asked him to pop the hood so I could see his oil filter. True to his story, the oil filter was so old and discolored, I could not even identify the brand. His only secret was to religiously check his oil level.

Gregory Poole Equipment over near the State Fairgrounds in Raleigh did oil analysis last time I checked. You'll have to know what the numbers mean when you get the analysis back- but it's local and cheap IIRC.....
