Is Mobile 1 full synthetic junk??? I was talking with someone at the track and they claim that its no good because they remove the zinc from it.

Everything I own from my mustang to my lawn mower has Mobile 1 in it...

The NASA guys that I sometimes hang around with ONLY use Redline, and I've heard that the circle track guys use Rotellia (spell?)

I'd like to run the best while there is still oil on the planet..

Any Ideas???

this wouldn't happen to have been the dude with the T1 Z06 by any chance? his wife was driving the hopped up Firebird. he told me the same thing. he did however suggest i switch to the Mobil 1 extended life with the gold top. 10/30 maybe i can't remember.

hey Ryan, care to go double or nothing on the over / under? i say four pages.

Just run Royal Purple in engine, ps pump, trans, diff, and you are good to go. Every bit as good as Redline. And makes shifts smoother on the GM 6 speed. Never had a trans overtemp warning like a lot of guys do. Sent oil to Blackstone Labs for analysis after track/ax/street abuse. Reports always came back good.

I don't think 4 pages this time Steve. Unless everyone says the same thing they said on the last Mobil 1 is bad thread...

Jake any time you want to come over and take a look the Mobil 1 remains in my SB Chevy, you are more than welcome. I do run Mobil 1 in my truck.

For daily driving or HPDE, Mobil 1 would probably suffice.

I switched to Lubricant Engineering fluids through out my race car. You can get it at AutoSport Gallery or at Carolina Auto Masters (Jeff just started to carry it).

This is not just a Mobile 1 issue. So that we don't rehash, just Google "ZDDP Oil". Recent API specifications call for reduced levels of ZDDP (which is a great anti wear additive but also apparently reduces life of cat converters). So if the oil meets those specs (CM and CJ-4 are two I think) then they will have lower ZDDP/Zinc content. I think that because of consumer (and maybe auto manufacture) backlash, that some vendors have reintroduced forumulations with higher ZDDP content, but these are still lower than it was a few years ago.

Anyone who doesn't feel they have to put the API seal on their oil can continue to provide formulations that include high ZDDP content. And you will see that type of formulation in various brands of racing oils.

Here is a good writeup (from a Porsche flat six point of view)...

http://www.lnengineering.com/oil.html

And of course any thread on oil has to have the obligatory link to this...

http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/

I continue to use Mobile 1 for daily use, but when I put the 914 on track, I will probably use something else (haven't what decided what just yet).

I think Jesus and Jerry Falwell use Mobil 1.

I run Rotella T-Syn 5w-40

$17/gal at teh WalMart, gets good reviews on BITOG.

For some in super abusive environments (REAL race cars), I'd spring for the ultra pimp oil.

Steve, 4 pages? I'll take the over.

Oil is Oil, If it is black and comes from old dinosaurs it is all the same. Change it whenever it looks black.

Advance auto oil, Quaker state, (Mustbe good Jeff Gordon uses it), whatever.

Just kidding, trying to help get the thread going.

If you are concerned your oil is not doing the lubrication thing correctly get an oil analysis. I use redline.

From the man himself.

The API sets the maximum level for phosphorus in the SJ and SL oils,
this combined with zinc as zincdialkyldithiophosphate are critical
anti-wear components. The level is less than 0.1% of phosphorus, the
reasoning is that higher levels may contribute to catalytic converter
degradation in engines consuming high quantities of oil.

My father has been running Mobil 1 synthetic for the longest time in all our family vehicles (with the exception of the Audi which is on Pentosin synthetic) and we have never had an oil related issue with any of our engines. Having said that, none of those vehicles have been abused either so it is difficult to judge.

I personally feel that most synthetic's are perfectly fine so long as you are changing the oil at it's proper intervals and a quality oil filter is being used. If the engine is being abused beyond simple daily driving, shorter oil change intervals should help prevent any issues.

One thing I must say regarding Mobil 1 synthetic is how people seem to either love it or hate it (based on what I have read on automotive forums and personal discussions). I have never seen such a drastic divide when it comes an engine oil.

If you don't take samples of oil to be analyzed by Blackstone, et al, then you really don't know what's going on in your particular application.

I use amsoil based solely on the fact that the bottles are easy to pour into the porsche without a funnel.

My dealer only had 5 qts of 20w50 so he gave me a "severe service racing" version of the same thing for the same price, and it was RED!

So double cool points for that, even though it's just the same thing with less detergent and red dye, I imagine.

Haven't had an oil analysis, but my 944 engine came back with really great compression and leakdown numbers.

You mean I need to change it every 500 miles? Good grief! I think I'll just avoid the issue and drive someone else's car from now on.
