OK, this may be a lengthy post but I'm looking for some advice.

First some background...

I have a trailer (it used to belong to Matt Nicholson) that used to have a truck box mounted in the front. I had to remove it when I mounted a weight distribution hitch (tows _so_ much better now) because the box interfered with the WDH brackets. We're kinda making do without the box but it was quite useful.

I now find that we need to tote some fuel jugs to our events (so I can blend to a higher octane) and I have 3 VP Racing jugs that are 10x10x22.5 inches. I don't want to carry them in the tow vehicle and it's a pain to get them secured in the rally car (we're already carrying a ton of stuff in there when it's on the trailer). So was thinking they could be mounted on the trailer tongue somehow.

Things I've considered...

1. Build a three pocket "basket" from PVC tubing and secure it to the tongue. Has the advantage that it's within my fabrication skills and cheap.

2. Build a wooden cage from 2x2's with plywood floor and mount to tongue. Still within my skill level but probably prone to rot and failure from water damage.

3. Buy a trailer tongue box. None of the ones I've seen are quite tall enough to accommodate the jugs. I need an interior height of 22.5 inches. Plus they're several hundred dollars. Also, I'm not sure if they're narrower than the truck box I had to remove.

4. Have some fabricate a box or cage out of metal (welding?). Outside my skill level but possibly cheaper than a pre-made tongue box.

Your suggestions are solicited and welcome.

Thanks.

Simon

How much room between the front of the car and the front of the trailer? Enough room to mount this? The one I have in my trailer is aluminum, holds two jugs and has a back. Probably around $90 or so.

Milk crates bolted to 3/4" plywood bolted to the tongue w/ U-brackets. Bungees to hold the fuel jugs in.

Ghetto but easy and effective.

The trailer has a convenient wheel bar that goes across the front, prohibiting the use of that space (not that there's much of it).

Good suggestion though, thanks.

Hmmm. This has possibilities.

Can anyone suggest a source for milk crates? I've looked in Lowe's, LnT, and Target.

Try places like Hold Your Own, office supply places, etc. You can also google for "material handling" companies and many have more industrial type solutions that will likely last a lot longer than the cheap crates that you'll find in stores. They'll basically be less brittle and thus more durable plastics.

I'm sure the Pine State Creamery on Glenwood Rd would have a few extra milk crates laying around.

What? It's gone? Damn, when did that happen?!??!?!

Look around the back door of elementary school cafeterias. There are usually stacks of them there.

My kangaroo station in Fuquay leaves them laying around out back. I can get you some if you know how many you need.
