A friend is looking to do his clutch in a 99 Mustang GT. Anybody care to recommend an (suitable but cheap) OEM replacement?

Any gotchas to this job before he jumps in?

OEM with club discount. Or OEM from Carolina Mustang in Cary. Given the amount of work involved, why take a chance unless there is a "no doubt" way of knowing that an aftermarket clutch is exactly the same quality as OEM? If the car is stock, the OEM clutch is certainly good enough. If the car is running in FS it "needs" the OEM I suspect. :D

Actually, all I've ever been able to get him out to is one or two of our Novice schools - no real events. But for his uses on a stock and otherwise somewhat tired car, OEM is just fine - just wondering if there were non-dealer parts (like an Excedy on a Honda that can be purchased anywhere) that would get him going for less $$, and still be 99.99% OEM like.

Have your friend price the OEM clutch at Capital Ford (THSCC discount = wholesale) and Carolina Mustang. He could consider a Ford Motorsport HD or King Cobra clutch kit, but why deal with the increased pedal effort?

Go to advance auto and order a replacement clutch. It is really not a big deal for a stock street car. I ran a Zoom clutch I got from Advance in the Camaro for 18 months. Yes, it did big apart on track, but it was subjected to a lot more abuse than a street car.

I'm running King Cobra in both of my mustangs. I havn't had any problems besides a well developed left quad muscle, as it's a LOT stiffer pedal then oem.

a friend of mine compared to shifting a dumptruck.....but i'm used to it..

I wonder if I could lubricate the throw out bearing without tearing the whole thing down?

sorry to have a question within a reply

thank
jake

If a replacement has yet to be purchased and he is looking for an aftermarket replacement (does not sound like it though), I can recommend SPEC and Centerforce. SPEC Stage 3 in my 99 and a Centerforce Dual-Friction in my 01.

If the car will never see any power increases, then just go with an OEM replacement. I wouldn't even bother with a King Cobra.

Per advice above, we sourced a full kit from Capital Ford, which was well priced with the club discount.

We started the job at around 6pm on a Friday night, and he drive it home at 6pm on Saturday with the new clutch. Would have taken a bit less time if the kit would have included the bearings and allignment tool like it was supposed to, which we drove all around town on a Saturday to find. Crossroads Ford helped us out a lot, though, and had the bearings in stock, and Carolina Mustang had the allignment tool (we were there anyway to get trans fluid).
