Help me settle an argument. I wont divulge which side I'm on for fairness reasons. Is it okay to use non-synthetic motor oil in an engine that is currently running synthetic or synthetic blend?

I say yes too. BUT, you're gonna get all sorts of answers and I doubt you'll get a consensus.

I have always heard that if you go the other way (switch to synthetic from conventional oil) that you are more likely to get leaks- because the synthetic will wash away any deposits that might be helping to seal gaskets and seals.....

That's what I've heard anyway....

IMHO, 99% of the cars on the road are fine with conventional oil IF it's changed on a regular basis. Synthetic is overkill for most cars except those driven hard on track or under similar conditions. Again, IMHO, YMMV, YGWYPF, etc......... ;)

One thing that I heard a long time ago that makes perfect sense is this- it's a good idea to switch brands of oil on a regular basis, because each brand has it's own additive package, and by switching brands, you're not as likely to get oil deposits in the engine because the different formulas will help wash away the other brands deposits. Discuss amongst yourselves, be sure to compare and contrast...........

Talking of oil there is lot of talk on the Porsche forum about the new oil formulation, you can also see something similar on some V8 or hotrod forum.

Edit: Link to Hotrod site: http://www.hotrod.com/techarticles/engi ... index.html

Here a link with some explanation on the change

http://www.lnengineering.com/oil.html

I decided to start to used this oil: http://www.bradpennracing.com/ as recommended from the link above.
Since my newest car is 2001 i will used it in all of them.
They have a distributor in High Point, Kennedy Oil.

What would happen if you filled an engine with gasoline instead of motor oil? I'm sure it would start, but would it catch on fire instantly? Build up temp and eventually explode?

Man I'd love to try that. Sounds like it would be a fun prank. Let's do it to one of Kevin's Subarus this weekend. Oh but which one, that is the question.

Discussing oil is like discussing religion. Everybody thinks they are right and the other guys are crazy.

Mike's idea scares me a little bit :o

Steve just doing my part to help out Ryan!

If you volunteer to drive it until it explodes, I'll film it for ya.

Any endavor that involves blowing up Subarus, you can put me down for.

BTW, I run Motul synthetic in the S2000. With the recent increase in the price for a quart of Mobil 1, the cost is pretty much a wash.

Pep Boys was running a sale on Mobil 1 with the filter. Price was good.

Now, lets take quotes from the other posts and post a separate reply for each............
