Depending on what parts your painting, this might be a good system.

If I actually owned a Camaro, that might be an issue. :) But I don't. Yet???

Of course, you could say the same thing about Hondas... :D

Donnie and Scott, I may take you guys up on that offer sometime in the future. Thanks! At the moment, the brackets I'm looking to clean up are so small that it seems like too much trouble. I was hoping to drop them in a bucket of "solution" and pull them out nice and clean although I'm sure there would be a little scrubbing involved somewhere.

Phil, is that ospho for rust removal or rust prevention or both? I'll see if I can find it later this afternoon when I'm on a better internet connection. At the moment, surfing any site with pictures is rather painful.

Por15 is good stuff. I will be using it extensively with my 914 in particular areas prior to doing a general epoxy primer.

"Ospho" and "Metal Ready" are brand names for a Phospheric acid based solution that leaves behind a Zinc phosphate layer (hazy white layer) as well as a light etch. I think it's primary purpose is to be used on bare metal prior to painting. I personally would put it in the "rust prevention" category and even then it should not be used just by itself. It is just part of some other process..

The way I use these products are...

1. media blast to remove all rust
2. spray with Ospho or Metal Ready
3. paint with Por15 or some other similar product.

Here are some before and after photos of one of the bad areas on my 914. This is from inside the engine bay looking at the box section that supports part of the rear supsension mounts. It is a multi layer box and I have the first two layers removed in most of this. I media blasted it to basically see the depth of the surface rust and then sprayed with ospho to prevent flash rusting of the bare metal from humidity in the air. All of this still needs a lot of work and will be media blasted at least once more before I start welding in replacements. The insides of the box sections will be painted with POR15. This car was not constructed using galvanized metal.

The real answer to this question should be painfully obvious: Rusteze Medicated Bumper Ointment.

Someone hasn't seen the movie Cars. It's easily the best NASCAR movie ever made, but beating out Days of Thunder and Talledega Nights isn't that hard.

Plus I can recite the entire movie since I have three and five year old boys.

Ahhhh. Actually, I have seen it but it was when it first came out so I don't remember all the details. Great movie.

I just figured you were hanging out with Buckley again or something. :D

Best remake of Doc Hollywood, maybe, but not the best NASCAR movie.

I just thought I'd mention -- using the blast box to clean small parts is *amazingly* easy. And fun. The first time I dropped a rusty part in there (a motorcycle shift lever), sprayed it, and 30 seconds later it came out perfectly clean and shiny I was like "Wow!".

Not trying to sway you -- I'd be interested in seeing what chemicals you can find that work well -- but I am a total convert. Now, whenever I need to paint something, and it fits in the blast cabinet, it gets sandblasted.

OK, Have I ever shared the fact that I am in Days of Thunder? True story, I meet Nicole Kidman before Mr. Scientology. I figure I ruined here life, meet me, obviosly attracted to short guys with big noses and since she saw my wedding ring she went after Tom instead. If you all would like to come to a meeting sometime and point out my blurred image on the screen I could for a small fee.

Same here.

Before and after of the my 911 5 lug hubs for the 914 (actually two hubs, one before the other after). Granted these were aluminum and it was just paint and other baked on crud vs. rust...

I learned how to drive watching Days of Thunder. I always down shift when I need to win. No. Not really.

Talladega Nights is pretty damn funny.

"Did that just happen?"
