Any SBC experts in the north Raleigh area that would be willing to lend hand for a few hours?

What kind of help are you looking for? Help diagnosing a problem or help with something that is hard to do with one person?

If it is the latter, I'd be happy to help after work or during the weekend sometime. I don't know much about Chevys but that never stopped me before. :)

I actually wouldn't mind picking your brain sometime about running a Camaro as a track toy. I'm very tempted to pick one up but it is nearly impossible to weed through the Camaro forums trying to find solid information.

A little of both  The combination of two 305's into one is complete. But it will not start, which did not really surprise me too much. It has spark and fuel. So I am guessing timing. Although I have gone through setting TDC a number of times. This is a time for another set of eyes.

The other issue could be valve adjustment. I did follow the service manual. I am wondering if they have too much preload.

I am probably going to load in the trailer and drop it off at Creech's on Friday. It will need tuned and put on the dyno any ways.

You got my number? 919.606.8836

I think I can answer most of your questions about Camaros and maybe even Mustangs.

(In my best "Karl from Slingblade" voice) Um, you got gas in it? :)

Yea, I'm not much help there. It sounds like you've checked everything I would have checked. If you ever need help that doesn't involve actual thinking, let me know... :D

I'll give you a call in the next few days when I get my thoughts together. I'm tempted by an LT1 Camaro (~94-'97) for some odd reason. I'd really like to grab an LS1 Camaro but they tend to go for more than I want to pay.

Thanks,

Jim

Yea, I checked for gas. It is just a little frustrating. Pulled the heads and cam from the old motor, had the heads slightly worked over (within the rules) and put it all back into the new motor. Not one extra bolt or danging wire. I was pretty happy about that.

So it has me scratching my head.

Yeah, a 94-97 LT1 hardtop is not a bad way to go.

Definitely sounds like a timing issue. Any chance the dist. is 180 out? Does it sputter or backfire at all? Are the plug wires in the correct firing order?

I have gone over the wires probably 3 times. And will do it once more. That might one of those things you look at 10 times and keep overlooking it. I know it has compression cause it is a bitch to turn over by hand.

Tonight I am going to rotate the dizzy 180 degrees and try that.

The strange thing, it will pop lightly and then just turn over. Nothing like it had done before when it has been out of time.

Try a timing light on the #1 plug wire while cranking to see if it's sparking close to TDC?

(Sorry, I know you were looking for help, not advice, but I can't stop myself :))

I'm a little woozy from two days of a stomach bug, so forgive me for wandering off into left field and asking if all of the vacuum lines are hooked up.

I will never forget Denise. Met her while cruising in my 84 black IROC Z. First time she met my parents, she showed up in spiked heeled white boots and a skin tight red/white striped jump suit  It was the Camaro.

Back on topic, I think Vincent may be right. I spoke with my brother and he went over some items. When the rotor is pointing to cylinder one and the mark is at 0, cylinder 1's exhaust is open and intake closed. Not good. But both of cylinder 6's are closed.

In the morning, I will roll it one more time to 0 on the timing tab and then rotate the dizzy 180 degrees. And see what happens.

You were right. The timing was 180 degrees off. I set TDC (top dead center) by watching the number one cylinder's valves. Once that was set, got the distributor pointed to cylinder number one. She fired right up.

For a few days, I could not get the idle under 1700. Found a leak on one of the intake runners. So I had to pull the TPI and go the gaskets right. So she is running like a champ now. The best it has run since late July. I will be heading to the dyno in a couple of weeks to get the documentation for the 2008 race season.

I learned a lot tearing two motors apart and combining them into one. I should have done it back in August and saved me a ton of money. I think it just proves, if you want it done right, do it yourself. I am saying that now. I might be singing a different tune in February

But since I lost my major sponsor, VISA, I hope it all holds together.

Glad I could help! When Ryan and I first tried to fire the rebuilt CRX engine we had the same issue which is why I remembered it. I also helped a friend to do a timing chain on a Jeep many years back with the exact same issue of being 180 degrees out. Maybe my memory isn't as bad as I thought. 8)
