well, I've looked at the finances, and I really can't afford the 'stones :(

Probably gonna order me some "backmarkers" tomorrow. $720 is just a lot of money to pay for a set of tires, $560 sounds more workable. Maybe I'll regret it, I dunno, but thats what I can handle right now, considering I was planning on being able to make it another couple months before buying tires. . .

maybe I'll get some Khumo's mid season next year and come roaring back in the season points. . .

Don't stress it. I had half a second on you last event in my fat bone stock rabbit on 195/65/15 all seasons. :D :D :D

ooohhhh... that's some smack talk, yo....

I wouldn't worry about the sidewall difference. Those 225/50-16 RE-01R's on special at TireRack for $117 look very appealing to me. Only ~$10 more than the Azenis and you'll get much better performance out of them.

Jim

That's what I was thinking about. 117 vs 146 is some serious savings.... plus I can start to use my fancy blue spoke wheels again 8)

You are over analyzing this a bit much.

Go with the lightest/cheapest combo IMHO

yeah, guess I'm pullin' a Whitney

Just for grins, I weighed my 16 and 17 wheels. Boy, was I surprized. The 17" are a heafty 25lb per wheel. The 16" came inbetween 18-19lb. If you consider the 16 'stones are 1lb heaver than the 17, I have a net loss of ~20lb of unsprung weight... yeehaw!

decision made, run the 16" combo. Now maybe I'll have something for Chris, Lee and Kevin. Damn, can't wait until next year....

happy trails!!

I hear ya coming Kendt!! Good driving at the last event, and BTW, thanks for picking up that cone! STS should be interesting next year.

Whatever. . .

It wasn't the tires, it was the cones that kept me from soundly whipping Dan, my 72.5 would have put me mid pack in STS (and soundly in front of the wabbit) if I could have just cleaned it up.

I'm confident that I'll be in the mix next year as well.

ok, the 16" re01r 'stones have been ordered from tirerack. At $117 a pop, that's cheap. I also asked and they are an 07 build, no 06. Had them delayed in shipment, so they should be here by the first of the year. I guess that gives me some time to prep/paint the 16" wheels. Now for a set of camber plates.... (just trying to keep up w/ Kendt!!)

I received the RE01R's yesterday from TireRack and I'm disappointed. Even though I asked the salesman if the tires were 07 builds that I was ordering, he obviously doesn't know what the warehouse is going to pull. Everything I received was built 9/06. That means that these will be a year and a half old before they run there first autocross. I guess that's why these were on sale. Is there going to be THAT much difference between an 07 tire and the 06 that I have? Right now anything is an improvement over what I was running.

Comments?

Rodney,

I wouldn't worry too much about it. The number of heat cycles is far more important in terms of rubber aging. Back in 2005 I bought some Dunlop SSR R-comps from Tire Rack on special, and they were 2002 mold dates. I was pretty pissed off at the time, but I mounted them up and hit the track, and they worked great. I ended up using those for many track events and a few autocrosses and pretty much forgot about the build date issue.

As long as the tires were not sitting in the sun or in an unconditioned environment (i.e. subject to temperature cycling and UV exposure), I doubt you would be able to measure much, if any, of a performance difference in them versus ones that were a year later molded.

Chuck

P.S. Almost forgot about some Pirelli Corsa R-comps I ordered from TR back in 2005 also (for a V70R we used to have) -- they were on "special" also, and they had mold dates from 2002 too. They were still very sticky and worked great for 4 track events and two autocrosses on that car, and then I gave them to Marcus who used them for who knows how many more autocrosses.

There was some one talking to toyo at sema in these threads

The 225-45-15 is due to come out sometime in Jan.
