there was this thread recently about new STS contenders....

http://www.thscc.com/phpBB/viewtopic.ph ... ight=tires

for the kumho and toyo tires about to hit the market. Right now I'll swing w/ the momentum of buying the 'stones and no new wheels (which from my view is MUCH cheaper). Is it worth waiting on these new tires mentioned in the thread? Any word on the street?

really appreciate all the feedback!!

you gonna have your new bridgestones by the December event Rodney? I should have new tires of one sort or another (still have to check the finances to see if I can make the bridgestones work, since I'm just comparing tires to tires, although thats how I'm leaning). Now I may want to take at least a couple runs in my own car, but I'm still anxious to drive the "wannabe STS monster" too.

Are the Kumho/Toyo tires going to be here anytime soon?

Can't remember where I read it, but a thread somewhere had the date as sometime in *April* - that may have been for the extended range on the Toyos.

Anyone have a dead 225/45-17 I can have? I'm curious if I can get a tire that big to fit with my stock wheels - the 49mm offset is higher than most aftermarket wheels.

Brice, no new tires at the "swap your ride event" but I will have some decent older 215's installed other than the slicks I'm running right now.

Kendt, I'm having the 215's pulled off this week. Want me to save 2 for you? You asked for dead and I have some dead tires if all you want to do is test fit. These are 225x45x17. Let me know.

Yes! Thanks! I know different tires will have different tread widths but if Azenis will be the backmarker tire next year maybe they'll be the cheapest HPDE tire option

Are you definitely coming to the Dec event? I could grab them from you then. I may also be making a trip with my truck to get old seats, some other tires, etc.

well rodney...i wouldn't classify my wheels as light weight...i'm not exactly how light they are, but they are borbet type e's and i don't think they are known for their lightness. i'll be sticking with the 615's i have on right now...i imagine that i'll do another track event two, so i'm not sure how long they'll last...and you know...there's 4 or 5 months between now and next season and i might have changed cars by then

More info on the Kumho XS - posted on the FocalJet forums - apparently from a Kumho guy at SEMA - note the "April deadline" statement:

Quote:
Sorry for the delay in response as there's too much fun stuff to do in Vegas and little time to be in front of a computer.
According to Rick Brennan, a 205/50-15 Kumho XS will be available as the only 15" size. Another size that may work for the EF Civic is a 215/45-16. I believe a 225/50-16 will also be made. There will be many sizes available in 17s and 18s as expected.
I spoke to a chief engineer and he tells me that the Falken RT-615 was the benchmark and that their test driver is consistently faster on the Kumho. Internally the tire has been known as the FK (Falken Killer). The test driver has also been faster on the new Kumho over the Bridgestone RE-01R.
If you're wondering why the one of the circumferential grooves is closer to the outside, it is for better rain performance without sacrificing dry grip.
Construction and design is finalized. Compound has yet to be finalized should be in orderly fashion to meet the April deadline. Cannot say whether all the sizes will be immediately available but time will tell.
Prices should be similar to Falken RT-615 prices which will represent a good deal for such a fast tire.

well, I've looked at the finances, and I really can't afford the 'stones :(

Probably gonna order me some "backmarkers" tomorrow. $720 is just a lot of money to pay for a set of tires, $560 sounds more workable. Maybe I'll regret it, I dunno, but thats what I can handle right now, considering I was planning on being able to make it another couple months before buying tires. . .

maybe I'll get some Khumo's mid season next year and come roaring back in the season points. . .

I agree.

If you don't want to put money down on new wheels I'd just slap on a set of new full-tread Bridgestone RE-01R's and be done with it. They make a great daily driver tire and wear very well from what I've seen. That will get you ~97% of the performance you are looking for and should be good enough to compete with locally.

Jim

Ditto. I ran these this year and I ran the previous version (RE010) on twice on the Type-R and I think they're awesome. I haven't run Azenies on the M3, so I don't have a comparison for you. I will tell you that Azenies only lasted for 5k on the Honda's I've owned, these RE-01R's have gone past that in the heavier M3.

If I were you, I'd talk (buy them if you have to) Kevin into some Falken Ziex's!

Not really Kendt. If you mean running with your Tarheel competition, sure. But if you just want to get a fix in before our season starts again, you can run year 'round with plenty of other clubs. You just need to be willing to drive ~1-2 hours to do so. For example, NASA is running @VMP this weekend and they have a few dates there already in January. With light turnouts, you can expect 10+ runs and 6-8 even with a full event.

As JimF mentioned, check out NASA (the new evil club).

From North Raleigh, VMP is close to the same time travel time as Laurinburg. The plus side, it is the best site on the east coast.
