One of the gents in the ITR forums posted a neat link this morning:

http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2007/10/micro ... rking.html

"Someone had the great idea of putting a high-pressure, heat-resistant camera inside the cylinder of a four-stroke engine. Shooting at 1000 fps, the camera recorded just exactly what happens to make engines run. Suck, Squeeze, Bang, Blow!"

First off, is this real?

If it is, it would be interesting to know what engine this is as it doesn't seem nearly as violent as what I had expected.

I wish that they would show more of the cylinder evacuation through the exhaust valve.

I watch this and think two things...

1. Is it fake? Something just doesn't seem right? I guess I am looking for a more controlled burn as well as it seems like it is pulling more air/fuel into the cyl than I would expect. I also don't understand why the camera seems to vibrate around as much as it does. I can imagine it vibrating due to the engine operation, but it seems to be vibrating at a rate higher than the apparent RPM of the engine. But maybe it is shockwaves in the block/head that are causing it.

2. It probably is real and maybe it is just challenging my pre-conceptions?

Related video that is pretty cool. Shows animated construction as well as operation of a 4-cyl, 16-valve, DOHC 4-cycle engine.

Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.

A real video

Another forum has speculated that the first video is a model of what happens; the indicator of that is that the valves aren't rotating as much as they would in real life.

That was an awesome four minutes. Any idea what type of engine that was?
