I need to know how to do some R&R on this Celica I got. Right now it needs an axle seal from the looks of it on the drivers side. I bought a Haynes manual and that is just too generic. Apparently the shop manual for a 90 Celica is out of print.

So what forums are useful for troubleshooting and repair. I've scanned through some and I'm not finding much exciting unless I want to know how to rice out the car.

The only Celica site I used to check out was NewCelica.org, but that's for the 2000+ model.

Instead of looking for a site, I would talk to someone who's local to you on the board here that's changed a FWD axle seal. If I were closer, I would help you out. In basic terms, this is probably what you'll need to do:

1. Rent a slide hammer at Autozone/Advance Auto if you don't own one (free with deposit)

2. Put car on jackstands

3. Remove wheel

4. Drain transmission fluid

5. Loosen the 32mm axle nut (Using an air wrench... if using a breaker bar, you may need to lower the passenger side tire until it makes contact with the ground)

6. Remove brake caliper (two bolts that connect the caliper to the hub housing) Hang caliper from spring using wire or bent wire coat hanger to keep stress off the line.

7. Remove rotor (should come off by hand after the caliper is off)

8. Remove two lower mount bolts on the strut

9. Disengage the outer tie rod end

10. Remove 32mm axle nut

11. Swiing hub toward front of car, while removing outer splined end from hub center.

12. Use slide hammer to remove the axle. Some come out without it, but I've never had one I couldn't get out when I had a slide hammer (thus I bought one).

13. Remove the axle seal with a screwdriver or pliers.

14. Install new axle seal with a rubber mallet, being careful to tap it in slowly and evenly. Using a small board to put over it and hit it in will insure that you don't knock it in too far if it doesn't have a lip to catch the back side.

15. Reinstall in reverse... the axle will go in by hand this way.

I would also buy two axle seals, just to have a spare if you damage the first one putting it in.

Once you get into it, it should be pretty easy. The only difference between this and RWD is everything is in one place. ;) - AB

Thanks Aaron! This sounds very similar to doing the axle on a RWD. I was concerned that there was some weird stuff since I'm not familiar with FWD. I was going to just start tearing sh!t up until I got there... I take it the axle seals are just a finicky on these cars about being perfectly flush or they leak right away. I've destroyed a few axle seals in the past not getting them in right.

The best site I've found so far for the 5th gens and older Celicas is Celica Tech. There are a few guys on there that are quite handy with them. I downloaded the BGB (93 Celica Tech Manual) but it doesn't have all the chapters. The Haynes is pretty focused on 3rd/4th gens with some notes on 5th gens.

I was surprised there weren't tons of tech articles on these cars since they seem to have a pretty large following.

Come on Wes that was too easy. I picked up the Haynes on the way home with the car. Right now I get more use out of it to put my laptop on it so it doesn't burn my leg...

Now if you find an original Toyota Shop/Service Manual for a 90 Celica you let me know. If it doesn't cost more than what I paid for the car I'll buy it!

This is a project car and I plan on tearing into it with or without a shop manual. It'll just save time, unnecessary broken parts, and scars on me if I have the right order of how things come apart and go back together

This might become an HS car next year if I can get it sorted out.

Did you pay less than $65 for the car?

Thanks Wes. I just bid on it. That's slightly under what I paid for the car
