I need to replace the clutch on the civic, does anyone have a suggestion on which brand? Also, anybody have any guidance on doing this?

As I engage the clutch, I get a violent reaction until I let it out all the way. Should make for a fun drive home today!

Phil

Hmmm I've had a little experience with this recently.

Honestly, I don't think the brand matters much unless you're building hp. The clutches in both my CRX's are cheapie parts-stores units which seem be holding up fine. The only clutch that gave me trouble was a (used) ACT clutch I got with some other parts. I think I messed it up due to slightly tighter tolerances than stock and the frustration of trying to get it running at the last minute.

It is fairly straight forward and you don't need to drop the entire transmission to change the clutch/pressure plate. I was able to slide it over and rest it on the radius rod to get enough room.

The only potential tool-store trip is if you don't have a 5/8" punch to get the "bitch" pin out of the gear selector. I found that the 5/8" punch that Sears carries is the perfect size and it only takes a couple of whacks with a hammer.

If you need any help besides actually lifting the transmission, just let me know.

Jim

Exedy is also what I put in my CRX years ago - clutch has been good, but I didn't resurface or properly scuff the flywheel, and developed a chatter because of it.

I had an ACT clutch (full faced, organic compound disc) in my integra and LOVED it. It never gave me any problems, even when I was running a 75 shot of nitrous through it. The axles didn't like it (the nitrous), but thats another story. . .

Hey Phil, back when I had my Integra, ACT did real well by me. I put it in at around 80K miles, and it lasted until I dunno when - at around 110K when I cracked open the trans to put the LSD in it, I replaced it with another ACT "because I was in there." The old one was still perfectly servicable.

I was NOT nice to that clutch at all, what with a few ProSolos, standing starts at honda Challenge races, and a handful of drag passes at Rockingham. Good stuff - nice and streetable but it "bit" nice and hard. Great compromise. I sure wish I could put one in the S2000, which has way more rear grip than it does pressure plate.

Oscar's got an Exedy in his uber-CRX and, even with his impossibly light Toda flywheel, street drivability isn't bad at all once you adjust to it. Most of the adjustment was to accomodate the flywheel methinks.

Good deal folks, I'll keep this info in mind for next time. I ran into a coworker who had all the parts I needed, from honda, new, $25 total! Can't beat that... including the reserfaced flywheel.
