Looks like I've got a sensor in my up-pipe that doesn't want to stay in place. It loosened up a few weeks ago, so I tightened it back into place thinking that it just needed to heat cycle. Then this weekend while at VIR, a nice exhaust leak happened again. The general consensus was that it was the gaskets, but a couple miles from home I remember the sensor and checked it when I pulled in the driveway and confirmed it. Tightened it down again and all was well, until I got to the office this morning as it had loosened up again! Any advice as to how to keep it in place? Should I use Lock-Tite, something more permanent, is this common or a fluke? TIA

Sounds like the curse of the hideous yellow Subaru to me.

I think Loctite makes a thread locker specifically for exhaust sensors.

How high are the exhaust temps in the up-pipe?

Their high temp thread locker only is good to 450f.

I am gessing you are talking about the stock EGT sensor. Can't you get a EGT sensor delete thingy similar to an O2 sensor delete thingy?

I already told him to do that when we installed the up-pipe. He's hard-headed.

The way I looked at it was the piece is already there, it's made to fit that location, why bother finding something else to try and fit in the hole? That and I didn't feel like tracking down the end and disconnecting it too.

Yeah, it's much easier to deal with it popping out repeatedly.

Cos - Do you have a crush washer on it? If not I'd recommend trying to find a copper or aluminium crush washer to fit the EGT. Every O2 sensor I've ever installed has had one, and I would bet that it's missing on your sensor. The crush washer deforms and "holds" the torque better than just steel-on-steel as the temps go up and down.

If it's the same hole size as an O2 sensor you can pilfer a washer from a dead one (ask around) or check an exhaust shop.

Let me know if my guess was right :)

Cos,

I may have a spare crush washer if you need one. Not that they are that expensive,, but you could stop by and we could put it on.

I was just tinking about this again - most of the O2 crush washers I have seen are two-layer, probaby to get more deformation. Most oil pan crush washers are just a solid washer of copper/aluminium. Do you have new dual-layer crush washers at DT?

No I think I have some at home from a past project where I had to change out an o2 sensor.

No, not another TiSP thread. :P

Mike, thanks for the suggestion. No I don't have one on there, it may have fallen off like you said. I'll see if I can track one down. I'll try Jeb's and go from there. Jeb, you at home today?

I am. I just went and checked where I thought it was and I guess I used it. It was on a new spark plug anti-fouler that I had, but I have the fouler sans the washer. I guess if you want to pick a couple up on your way home, I can still help you put it on. Sorry for the false alarm!
