I got my new STS2 miata home finally. I have a pair of Kirkey aluminium seats that I want to install before the Dixie Tour at the end of the month. The rule states that the seat and mount must total at least 25lbs for both seats. I do not have the tools or the basic knowledge of how to create mounts or adapt the stock sliders for these seats. Is there anyone out there that has the ability to help me get these things in the car before then?

I also have to get the VLSD and a new mazdaspeed clutch installed before then also.

man - where does the time go?!?! This is the offseason, right?

no - this is the uber lightweight 5lbs lighter than the oem one, but no one can tell the difference because it is stamped with all of the factory oem markings... j/k

it is the oem - I just got it through mazdaspeed. :)

depending on the position of the pre-threaded holes in the seat, you can use the stock sliders by drilling a new hole in the top slider rail at the rear (usually). The only problem may be that the floor mounting tabs on the inside slider don't quite line up with the M10 x 1.25 bosses in the floorpan.

When I mounted my Momo seats, I had to elongate the mounting tab holes by about 1/8" on the inside rail to be able to use the OEM mounting points, and locate new mounting points for the outside slider rail. To do this, be ready to use a 1-1/4" hole-saw on the floor pan to gain access to the cavity in the cross-member which is welded onto the floorpan. You can then use the hole you created with the hole-saw to place the required LARGE Grade 8 flat washers and lockwashers under the outside seat bolt / nuts to secure the outside slider rail safely.

Not sure, of course, if the bolt pattern on the Kirkey seats in the same as Momo, but if they are, it's a fairly easy adaptation. Just takes some patience in being sure of your hole location on the rail before you drill. :)

You are welcome to have al look at mine anytime. Will be at VIR this weekend.

Yes, we can take a look and see what it will take.

You can also check motorsportseats.com to see if they make sliders for yours.

Just an FYI, the driver and passenger sliders are not simple mirror images of each other, so each side will need to be a custom mount, no making one side flipping it over and using it as a template for the other side.

Have fun!

I'd offer to help, but the last set of Miata brackets I did almost resulted in divorce proceedings :)

Cold ambient temps mean that you don't need ice for the beer. :checkered flag:

Sorry to come in late on the conversation.

The Kirkey's are a full aluminium seat. There are no bolts or holes in it, just a semi-flat aluminum bottom. You drill your own holes to match up with your mounting brackets.

When I put a Kirkey in my RX-7, I didn't use the sliders, but rather just bolted the seat in place, since I was going to be the only driver (and I wanted to maximize the headroom.

If headroom is not a consideration, I would just pull the sliders off of the stock seat and see if you can use the exisiting holes in the sliders and drill the Kirkey to fit. You may have to use some spacers up front if there is a gap between the seat bottom and the holes.

Perhaps as important - what are you using as a seat-back brace? The SCCA requires a back brace for these seats, and it may not pass tech without it. The I/O Port Racing brace is a fairly easy install if you have a harness or roll bar, but costs around $75 each.
IO Port also sells some side mounting brackets for the Kirkey's, but I'm not sure how this would work in a Miata - I imagine is depends on the seat width.

What model Kirkey did you get?

Good luck,

-bill

Bill -- thanks for the input -- but these seats are being used for my autocross car, not my ITA race car. So, no seat back braces are required. The other issue I have is that I need to get the seat and bracket/sliders to total exactly 25lbs (per the new rule this year).

If I use just the stock sliders and the kirkey, I am actually under weight, so I need to add some extra weight to the seat/sliders just to make it legal.

Oh, and believe me, headroom is a consideration - 6'3" in a miata. :)

Wait till you see my passenger seat next weekend. I didn't have the money to get the driver's seat that I wanted but the passenger seat and pieces I needed were free. :D

Edit: Sheet steel or aluminum make for good weights, that can be added.

Can anyone help me fab up some side mount brackets in the E30?

I emailed Chris Schimmel but i think he's too busy.

I have the same bottom mount bracket on order that i used already for the passenger side, but i'm afraid its not low enough. :/
