I'd be more concerned with longevity of the header itself. Many (if not most) of the header manufacturers I've looked into void warranties when wrapped due to the extra heat the header sees. Maybe not an issue with Jim's heavy duty custom job, but not a chance I was going to take. I had the jet-hot type coating and it seemed to keep things cooler, was touchable quicker, and looked pretty good. YMMV.

Sounds logical to me, Dustin. Definitely would look better. I was a novice engine builder when I did the 1275cc MG "A" engine. Wrapping was all I knew about :)

The wrap definitely quiets the "header tinking", though.

SS doesn't corrode or deteriorate so there would be no longevity benefit to coating it. I use SS casting flasks I cut from SS exhaust tubing in my business where they are baked at 1300*F for 8-10 hrs then plunged into cold water after casting at least once a week. Some are > 10 years old and still show no signs if ill effects other than discoloration. The SS catback system on the Miata is 7 years old and is as good as new except for color. That header will far outlast several vehicles IMHO.
I have a SS catback being built for me for the Soli, If there was any advantage to doing so I'd have it coated since it runs the full length of the car.
I'm not sure that the ceramic coating (actually a type of powder coating) would stick to the SS, not much does.

If anybody still cares, I wound up taking the header to Diversified Finishers in Statesville. Jinx Jordan (fellow auto-x'er, multi-time nat. champ) works there and he was able to answer all of my questions. They use Airborn Coatings which is apparently widely used in the racing community. He had some samples around the office and they all looked really good. I'll report back when I get the finished product.

They also do bead-blasting and powder coating and had a bunch of cool projects around the shop. They have the facilities to take an entire chassis and strip it down to bare metal to do a complete ground-up restoration. One of these days I might jump into a project like that and while they are ~2 hours away, I wouldn't hesitate to take anything there.
