I'm doing the timing belt on my gf's V6 Honda Accord and i can't get the damn crank pulley nut/bolt off. I've tried PBblaster and a torch coupled w/ a corded electric impact gun and a makeshift strap wrench (visegrips + serp belt) against a 3' breaker bar. Nothing can break it and the serp belt ripped.

I noticed recessed into the pulley is a big hex shape. So maybe there is a tool that is like a breaker bar w/ a big hex like end that would hold the pulley. Anyone know of or have anything like that? Or any other ideas?

:(

Dan, sorry to hear you are having issues. :( I did my Civic myself and am considering doing our V6 Odyssey.

You mentioned that you used an electric impact wrench. Do you have any idea what its torque rating is? I am guessing it is lower than you need. My suggestion would be to use an air powered impact wrench. If you don't have a compressor, you may be able to borrow a wrench and use a small portable air tank. I was able to break mine loose with an air wrench, but I dont think I would have been able to do it with a breaker bar without a way to lock the crank.

I think there IS a tool to lock the pulley. You might check some local parts stores to see if they have a loaner?

Dan, where are you located? I am in south Durham (RTP area). If you want, you can try my wrench (a cheapy that is not that powerful) and my portable air tank. I keep putting off buying one of the HF "Earthquake" air wrenchs.

I had a stubborn crank pulley once on a 90 Civic (which I sold to the Petersens, and now Phil Fausz owns). My impacts wouldn't touch it.

So I drove the car to a local Meineke place and let them have at it. Two guys tried it with their guns and it didn't budge. Some old crochety mechanic was watching. He came over and said to the other guys, "Get out of my way, you're embarassing us". He brought out a well-worn black case and took out of it an impact gun that might as well as had "Bad Motherfucker" written on it. Crank pulley = off.

The snugged it back on with a regular impact gun and I went home to finish the R&R.

Just a suggestion :)

Yeah, I was going to suggest driving it somewhere and having someone else break it, torque it back and then you can drive it home and finish it up. But you mentioned you had a belt broke already. I am assuming it is an accessory belt. Since you have to take all of the belts off anyone, now is a good time to replace those. You could put new belt on, and drive it somewhere to have someone else break it loose. I assume all you have to do to break it loose is pull a wheel off and that there may actually be a hole in the splash sheild that allows you to run a socket and extension through and reach the nut on the crank pulley?

yeh. i might have to. i'm trying to avoid that though because the PS pump is off, the distributor cap and plugs are out, a motor mounts out, etc.

i'm going to try one of these:

I am not sure if the rotation is right on your honda motor. But I have done this on datsuns in the past. Put a breaker bar on the socket with the bar set so it will hit a frame section. Engage the starter. The breaker will act as it was hit by a BFH. Of course some Honda motors are reverse rotation and this will not work on them.

Where are you located? I might be able to borrow a friends big impact and portable compressor. I am in Raleigh.
